Children in Guest Count

Victoria, on September 30, 2018 at 3:19 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

What is the rule of thumb for children being included in guest count?

For example, I think it would be a bit unreasonable to count a 6-month old as a "person" in terms of handing a number to the caterer... haha. Sorry if this question is silly, but seriously... can you disregard kids under a certain age?

Thanks in advance!!

    I had a couple friends with babies and asked what they would need. One just needed a high chair and one needed a chair to set the carrier down. Otherwise they didn’t need food so they weren’t included in the number for the caterer. Toddlers I counted in the kids meal number.

    Caterers usually charge half price and give a child menu and susualy have an age limit...like 3yrs ti 10ys old. I have found they don't charge for kids under 3yrs as they usually don't eat a fully meal.My daughter was last flower girls recently in my cousin's wedding . She didn't have to pay for her and the other flower girls as they were just under 3. They barely ate the food. My daughter munched in cheese and crackers rhe whole night mecue had steak abd crab cakes. She nibboed on a little but of it. Both kids were mainly interested in being on the dance floor the whole night than eating a whole meal

    Our caterer has age ranges for kids that are different prices so reach out and ask the age breakdown from your caterer. I have 3 age breakdowns (infants, 1-4, and 5-10) for our caterer and rental purposes.

    You will have to ask your caterer this. Infants for us coat nothing, but kids in general count as a head. They do get a small discount for being under 21 and if they want a kids meal, but if they want the same deal as the adults, it's full price.

    You should ask the caterer. Because our venue was a caterer, anyone who needed a seat (highchair/place for carrier included) counted.

    Be sure to check with your venue and/or caterer. For us, we're turning in our count something like this:

    Total of XXX people

    XX = meal choice 1

    XX = meal choice 2

    XX = kids meals

    XX = no meal needed/infant

    (we have a few special needs guests who need a seat, but will be bringing their own meal for medical needs) It's better to be overly specific than not specific enough!

    Some caterers have special rates for children under a certain age. Just check with your vender.

    Your venue and caterer likely call out ages/children in their contracts or at least have policies (ours has different pricing for different age groups: under 3 are free, under 21 are discounted. It's totally acceptable to go in with an assumptive close, but it's a good idea to double check/give them a heads up. I would be surprised in the category requires a six month old as part o the guest count (if they do definitely push back)

    This varies by caterer so I would ask. Some will offer kids meals under a certain age, and free under a certain age, but you need to confirm.

    Our caterer has 3 counts. 1 for adult guests (regular meal), 1 for kids under 12 (kid's meal), and 1 for vendors (vendor meal). I will tell the parents of kids what the kid's meal is and see if that works for them, but they will get a meal regardless of age if the parent asks for it.
