Check lost in mail...

Patricia, on April 26, 2016 at 9:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

My fiancé and I mailed a check out to our DJ. Paying the remainder balance for everything. We sent this check in the mail almost a month ago. About 2 weeks after I sent it I texted the DJ asking if he received it because it hasn't been cashed. He responded by saying he emails out a receipt as soon as he receives it so I should be getting on soon. I texted him again on the 13th this month asking if he had the check. It still hasn't been cashed. He responded by saying he is in California for the week so he has not been in the office. I asked him to let me know when he is back. I haven't heard anything. I don't like sitting on checks and it makes me nervous that its just floating around somewhere. I texted him today asking if he is back because it still hasn't been cashed and I don't know if I should cancel it. He hasn't responded. I am annoyed that he hasn't given me an answer in a month. I don't know how to get a straight answer out of him.

Put a stop payment on it. Can you not pay with paypal or something?! People still want checks by snail mail nowadays??

Eta: ask if theres a different way to pay before you cancel it

Ask him if he received the check yet. If not, notify him that you will be putting a stop payment on the check. Ask for another method you can pay him by or arrange a meeting where you can hand the check over in person.

My worst fear. I'd put a stop to the payment and either pay through paypal, or in person.

So he has received it but hasn't cashed it? you need to put your foot down in that case.

if he hasn't received it and it hasn't been cashed, cancel it now and send a new one before it winds up in the wrong hands.

I asked him before I sent it if I could pay with my bank card over the phone or if I could pay electronically and he insisted I send a check. I find it weird too. I really hate to be a pest and keep texting him but I need to know what's going on and he's not giving me an answer.

Also I think checks "expire" after 30 days.

Yeah I guess I will need to cancel it. Its going to be like $35 to do that but better than losing well more than that. I just feel like he's not really being accommodating if hats even the word. I don't feel its good customer service.

I paid most vendors with PayPal or money orders since I ran out of checks (no idea what I was thinking since I knew I was booking vendors). I did ask each vendor to confirm via email that they received the deposit so I have a paper trail as well. My MUA insisted on an actual check so I had Bank Of America send her one. It can be done online.

I only had to pester one vendor. If he doesn't answer soon I would let him know you are canceling it and either send another or ask for another payment option.

If he isn't receptive maybe instead of texting, send an email. It is easier to save and refer back too if needed.

Until he says he doesn't have it, I would wait. He sounds super busy and it's probably sitting on a desk or in his mail box. We had vendors that didn't cash our checks for over a month. I would hate for you to waste money to stop payment and it was in his house all along. He doesn't seem too concerned with cashing it right now and he knows you sent it. I would send one more text that says Please confirm receipt of our final payment ASAP. If lost in mail, need to put stop payment on it immediately.

I'd put a stop payment on it and then if he still insists on you sending another check, go to the post office and send it certified with a return receipt request. It will cost you probably $6-ish to mail it that way but he'll have to sign for it and you'll receive the receipt that he signed and be able to track it. That way you'll know he got it.

I would let him know you plan on putting a stop on it because it hasn't been cashed yet - which may rush him to answer that he has it. Your bank will probably charge you a stop payment fee as well.

Ill give him until noon and I will send him a text saying I am stopping payment. It probably is just sitting on his desk.

Well, its kind of ridiculous that he seems to be giving you the run around. Doesn't he want to get paid?? Also, you need to rest assured that he is booked, paid, and confirmed.

Be polite but firm and tell him you are putting a stop payment on it if he doesn't seem to have it. He will likely get his butt moving as he won't want to wait for another check.

That's so annoying! Checks Seem so out of date!

I would relax until he says that he doesn't have it. You're backed by your bank if fraud is committed. I am a bank manager. The last thing you want is he puts it in his account and it bounces back and he charges you for everything that bounced because of it. I have to deal with this too often.

Just cancel it if he doesn't get back to you and ask if he'll do paypal or something since that might be easier.

If the check is payable to a biz name, it can't be cashed easily by anyone who stole it.

Let him know you are stopping payment and you will reissue it when he is back in town. He sounds a little busy and a little flaky and if its stressing you out, just be done with it!
