Is it cheaper to buy from etsy and get printed or just buy them printed already?

It really depends on the website, also what kind of invitations you want and how many you need. Lots of popular invite websites have sales all the time. Here are some that I've seen mentioned here:

    Shutterfly

    Zazzle

    VistaPrint

    Ann's Bridal Bargains

    Minted

For my needs the cheapest and prettiest option was to get the template from Etsy, print on printrunner.com and get envelopes from Cards and Pockets. The other websites are good too they just weren’t the style I was looking for.

There are also websites where you can download invitation templates for free and they look really nice still. The pictures are examples of some free download invites that I liked (even though I’m going in a different direction now after a theme change)

I got my save the dates from zazzle and it was like $30 for 60 of them. And they sent them printed. They always have awesome promotions and the quality of mine was great. I got so many compliments. Here's an example. Front and back

I think if you found a design you like for relatively cheap from Etsy (they have a TON of digital files you can buy where you change the details of the invite) and then get them printed from a local print shop is the cheapest way to go. I even found a bunch of free digital files of invitations online (just search free wedding invitations). We have a print shop where I work and I was able to buy 150 invitations for $20... I designed my own invites, so I didn't have to pay for the file. I did the same thing for my Save the Dates.

I bought a template from Etsy, got them printed and bought pockets, envelopes, and belly bands from cards &pockets. My friend has a printing company and printed the invites and addresses the envelopes. I assembled everything but saved a ton of money so it was worth it

Vistaprint is what we used for our Save-the-Date cards. Very affordable. We made our own design, but they look like they had a lot of really nice designs on there as well.

We did email save the dates. We found a free save the date template and my fiancé is tech savvy enough to change it a bit to be what we wanted.

We ordered our invitations through Minted, paid about $300 but we wanted a very specific style that required printing on front and back, envelope liners, etc. You can get much cheaper options through them. I think they offer 20% for first time buyers, also. Attached is the style of invitation we did.

I plan on doing the same as I did for my Save the dates. I ordered them from Vista Print but they are actually 4X6 POSTCARDS! Downside: You will need to design it yourself Upside: I got 260 of them for $19!!!

We went through minted.com and they have a huge selection of invites as have different price ranges for you to choose from. They also will address them as well so they all look the same. We loved it.

I also had a friend who made hers for about a dollar a piece. She typed it up and formatted it, printed it on thick cardstock, added lace, and some embellishments she bought at Michael's. They were super cute.

This should depend on how many you need. I only need 10 invitations, so printing them myself was hands down the most affordable options (blank cards and envelopes were $12). But, if you need 100+ invites or so, I would highly suggest using minted, vistaprint, zazzle, or one of those options. I can still remember the agony of printing, embellishing, stuffing, and sending my brothers invitations for him lol I would have paid any amount of money to not do that. It was a lesson learned and I wouldn't recommend self assembling more than maybe a dozen or so invites
