People have gotten cakes from places like Publix and Walmart. You can always try there. Sometimes people will also have a small cake to cut and then a large shortcake in the back for serving to guests. Cupcakes or other non-cake desserts have been popular lately as well.

We are doing a small cutting came and a sheet cake for everyone else. I think it's a very popular option! We're getting it from a bakery due to my mother's request but my caterer had suggested getting the Chantilly cake from Whole Foods and then a sheet cake from a grocery store. I'm from Florida... We love Publix cake!!

As PPs mentioned, you could do sheet cakes or even cupcakes for guests. We saved a ton of money by doing cupcakes.

Check your local grocery store. Do not do publix as they are trying to compete with other bakers and are charging a hefty fee. Sam's clubs and costco which are nationwide sell wedding cakes and pretty cheap as does walmart. Contact them. You could do a cake for you two to cut and then cupcakes for the guests.

My cousin got hers from a Costco in Houston, and you would have sworn that it came from a high end bakery. Plus costco cakes are the bomb.

I don't live in an area with Publix either, but any major grocery chain will have a bakery section.

You could always ask around and see if any of your friends know a baker. Not saying that you'll for sure get a discount if a friend is referring you to them, but it is an option. I'd also say look into doing sheet cakes for service and maybe having a Styrofoam cake with a real top layer for the cake cutting. After you cut the top layer, the catering staff can serve pieces from sheet cakes to guests from the kitchen and your guests will never know.

I went to a few bridal expos and checked out all the cake suppliers there. I got lucky and found a home baker who actually makes exactly what I was looking for! Got my cake for 100 and two dozen cupcakes for just less than $400! I’m so very happy with her!
