You're going to have to do a lot of DIY projects. I'm sure it can be done tho.

Small guest list, so you can spend more on the memorable details for each person there (good food, alcohol, etc)

The thing that makes weddings look "expensive" in my opinion is the attention to details. If you want to keep costs down there is going to be a lot of DIY in your future, which is perfectly fine because I'm doing a lot of DIY as well. First off: dollar tree, Craigslist, and spray paint will be your best friend! If you have a close friend getting married ask if they're able to keep costs low and how. Really focus on what's important to you and your partner and prioritize that. Also Pinterest can be a great support, create a secret board that only you can see so your details are hidden from everyone else.

If you have a small budget, I suggest focusing on food and booze for your guests. No one will care about the decor if the food and alcohol sucks.

The sign of a quality wedding overall is good food and drinks. Reduce your guest list and consider even hosting the event at a nice restaurant!

A little bit different opinion - to me, DIY makes anything look cheaper unless crafting/art is your trade. IMO, go more minimal and don't do the unnecessary extras (signs, favors, programs, DIY decor, etc) to concentrate your budget on the things that make a difference for guest experience.

Check Facebook groups and Craigslist in your area for second hand decor.

Cut the guest list mercilessly. Spend your money on a great ceremony, great food, alcohol and a fabulous DJ or band. That's all you really need.

Keep it simple rather than go overboard trying to overcompensate with cheaper items. If you don't already have a venue, choose one with great views, or that doesn't require much decorating. Focus on your hosting and everyone will have a great time.

I'd agree to focus on finding a venue that doesn't require a lot of decoration or work to make it look good. An elegant venue as your backdrop will save you a lot in that regard, and in my opinion is classier than using ribbons and banners and shit to make it look decorated.

PPs nailed it, focus on good and plentiful food and beverages. Go minimal on decor and eliminate any unnecessary items like favors, printed napkins, programs, menus, etc. Find a nice venue that doesn't need a lot of decoration and spend wisely on everything else.

I'm with Ruth... DIY doesn't usually "look expensive" and often ends up costing quite a bit of $$

As some others have said, go for minimal but nice decor over elaborate and cheap. DIY signs can be super cute but give off a country chic vibe not a classy/elegant vibe - signs almost never look expensive, nor are they necessary. Use real stuff over fake whenever possible (ex real candles look more upscale than fake ones).

Shop around and compare prices before making purchases . DIY some stuff . Buy second hand items that no one will notice are second hand like handle holders . Check clearance section of craft stores like Joann fabrics , Michaels , hobby lobby .

I’m at a loss for this as well. We have a big guest list and a limited budget, here in California unfortunately you can’t have candles anywhere. Which was a big surprise for us and especially because we are doing a halloween wedding and all my favorite table settings were candle heavy. So I’m going back to square 1 now and trying to figure out what to do!

What about flameless candles? There are some that look really real and don't cost too much. Check out Facebook bridal groups. I see people selling them all the time in my area.
