Charging at the bar

Brandi , on January 25, 2010 at 6:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I'm not sure what to do about drinks. I really can't afford to have an open bar. I was thinking of having my friend that is a bartender. I was thinking of getting a few different drinks together and then charging for each one. Is this a good idea????

From what I've heard----no....I've been hearing alot about that---I've heard to just stick to wine and beer or no alcohol at all. I'm going to BevMo and just buying as I'm going along so I'm not paying a lot at once.

Sure why not? alot of us are not made of money and cant affored full open bars. you can even do just a few signiture drinks and beer and wine to keep your costs down.

luckly the venue we got married at had a full bar and servers and people paid as they drank and everyone was fine with it :]

Really, it depends on the crows and how well you know them, all weddings were I'm from have a cash bar, usually on $2.00 drinks, as you can bring in your own liqour and what not. But, they do offer free drinks from 5pm-6pm, then usually a bottle of wine or two for each table for the toasts. The bar legally has to be shut down during supper. If you know your guests won't mind paying, then go ahead, just don't charge the regular ful bar price..

We are purchasing a keg for the reception and then when that is out or they want any liquor they will have to pay...that is all we could afford, and we feel like that is fair enough...

My venue had open bar or no bar at all (just soda and lemonade and coffee). So to cut down on liquor expense we went with beer, wine and margarita's only (with the wine they could make Sangrias also). I had roughly 65 drinking guests and the total cost of the liquor was $430. Since I had lots of wine left over I was able to take it back to Total Wine and got $128 back. So total cost of alcohol was $300.

Check with your venue. Some venues require you to have license if you are selling the drinks. Personally I think it is kind of tacky to charge for drinks. You would be better off not serving alcohol at all to save on your budget. Alcohol can be a big budget buster. If people see free drinks their gonna drink. Try maybe like some sort of punch where you can mix different "cheap" liquor and serve that. It can be worked in as your own signature drink.

Can you set aside a total amount first? Once the limit is reached then no more.

Thanks, it's so hard because our families are alcoholics.

Even a better reason not to serve alcohol. LOL!! You can't go wrong with just beer and wine.

Do they have beer and wine and a cash bar? I went to a very nice wedding in September. beer and wine were free, if the guests wanted liquor they have to pay for it.

I would just serve a type of beer, red wine, white wine (can be bought at bevmo or costco) and charge a nominal fee for everything else.

How about doing an open bar for an hour then a cash bar after that. You alos have to check with your venue, some places will not let you bring any alochol in.

I was having trouble deciding on what to do with the Bar too. The venue liqour license will only allow them to supply the liqour so we decided to set a limit at $400.00 for the bar all drinks are $2.00 so when that money runs out then it will be a cash bar.
