Charge tax on service fee?

Yun, on July 26, 2019 at 7:40 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4
I reserved Westin Pasadena for my wedding venue.

They charged 24% gratuity service fee for both room rental, food and beverage. In addition to that, the hotel charge 10.5% tax not only on the room rental, food and beverage, but also on the 24% service fee.

I am from NY, NY doesn’t charge tax on service fee, is it legal for them to charge tax on service fee in California?

I felt I got scammed, because the tax charged on the service fee is $500! I am so upset. Please help!

Every quote I've gotten so far applies tax to the service fee. It's a complete scam, but I've found it to be the norm.

It's normal. Think about when you go to restaurants and there's those lines for tip you can add and sometimes they do suggested gratuity on the bottom to tell you how much tip would be at 15%, 18%, etc - the suggested gratuity is usually the amount after tax ! why would I tip with tax included UGH... so I saw for venues they normally do that for the tax and gratuity too. It is a rip off Smiley sad

It’s not a scam. It’s based on the tax laws in each state.

Yep. Seems like a scam but isn't.
However they cannot tax gratuity (which is not the same as service fee)
