Changing name in what order?

Jolie, on October 29, 2019 at 2:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 5

What should be changed first and does anyone have info on how long these things take?

Is social security card the first thing to change?

Then license, then passport?

Then what? 401(k) name, credit cards, etc.

Also can my social security be changed but not the license and passport yet? I am just highly confused. Obviously things take time so would the social security card name and work documents be most important to match up?

Social Security is first. You will need your new Social Security Card to change your name on your drivers license and passport. After you have all of your new cards you can change your name with HR, bank, credit cards, etc.

I ended up taking a day off from work and doing my Social Security and drivers license on the same day. But you can most likely call the office and get an appointment beforehand so you don't have to wait as long.

I got married last year and just now updated my passport, but I didn't really need it until now anyway.

Contact your bank and make sure your employer knows your new last name.

Here's a list that will help with the others:

You won't be able to change anything until you have your new SSN card! See the website below for details.

Okay so it’s okay to change the social security and work info before the passport. That’s what I thought. To my knowledge the passport doesn’t have to match the social security card so long as your flight ticket reads what your passport and license say. I want to begin with the social security and work stuff obviously but not do the passport and license til after the honeymoon in January.
