Changing name before or after honeymoon?

melissa, on June 5, 2016 at 4:54 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14

So FH and I have booked our honeymoon for 3 weeks after our wedding. I figured this would give us a little time to unwind from the wedding and relax especially since we are traveling abroad . I plan on changing my last name and would like to get this done as soon as I can. Did any brides change their name before their honeymoon and have any problems?

I would wait until after, especially if you travel outside of the country. Your flight info should match your ID.

    I would wait until after!

Especially if you already booked travel plans in your maiden name!

Your plane ticket needs to match your current legal name at the time of the flight.

I would wait. You're cutting it close to get your DL/SS card changed in that time and getting your passport changed will definitely take longer.

You won't be able to get a passport back that quickly, unless you pay the super crazy expediting lol

Definitely wait to change it. I'm excited to change my last name as well but I'd take those extra fews weeks of my maiden name over travel issues or paying for expedited passports and documents.

I changed mine after. I don't think it would have been a problem, but I didn't want any issues with travel documents.

Definitely wait.... all of your id's and tickets should match. If you leaving the country you may also have issues getting back in if your passport has a different last name. This happened to my mom on a family trip to Mexico last June. Her and my dad divorced, so she changed her named back but her passport still had her maiden name. They let her out but getting back in was a headache.

I'm waiting until after my honeymoon, which is several months after our wedding, to change my name. Because I booked my honeymoon flights under my current last name (maiden) and don't want to deal with the headache with the airlines etc

That won't be enough time to get an updated passport. You may not even have your certified marriage license yet, which you need to change your name. Plus, the name on your flights must match your IDs exactly, and usually there is a cost associated with changing the name on the ticket.

Your name on your airline ticket and your name on your passport have to match. So it's best to book with the name that is currently on your passport, and then update everything when you get home.

You can find a great article about it here.

You can get a passport that quickly if you get it expedited. Getting an expedited passport here is about 20 more, don't know if that varies depending on where you live. However you want your name to match the one on your airline tickets and such. I would just wait.

I would wait until after your honeymoon. You will need to wait to get your official marriage certificate which can take weeks, then you need to go to ss. Depending on your state you need to wait a few days before heading to the DMV to get a new driver's license. Add if you are traveling internationally it is very expensive to get a passport changed in a week or two. You wouldn't have a full three weeks for expedited, as you need your marriage certificate and SS change first. Too much to get done in 3 weeks. But you can certainly start using your new name socially even if it isn't legal yet.

Wait until after the honeymoon to change your name so you don't run into problems with customs and your passport.
