Changing maiden name to middle name when taking Fh's last name...

Ruth, on October 9, 2019 at 7:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

Hi everyone! Smiley smile First post here.

So, I'm definitely decided in taking my FH's last name, but I don't know what to do about my middle name. I've never loved my middle name, it's pretty and flows well, but not the best memories associated with it. I do love my maiden name! I also don't anticipate us having children, and I'm an only child. I would love to keep my maiden name somewhere in there, but would it be weird to have my maiden name be my middle name? And then what happens to my current middle name after, is it just gone?

I've never had to think about all of this until now so advice and opinions are welcomed!

I took my maiden name for my middle name 22 years ago when I got married. This time I’m keeping my maiden name and dropping my current last name and taking my FH’s last name. My boys are older now so having the same last name matters much less to me.

That’s a super common thing to do in the south! Yes your middle name would just be gone. Check with your local clerk and make sure that’s allowed as it differs by state on what can be changed via the marriage certificate vs needing a court order.

This is what I'm doing! As PP said, your current middle name is going to be dropped. I'm not that sentimental toward my middle name, so it was a fairly easy decision to make! I wanted to keep my last name as it's unusual and it's been part of my identity for my whole life. This is a great compromise, in my opinion Smiley smile

Just be sure you can legally make your maiden name your middle name. Some states won't allow you to do that.
