Changing last name in Texas?

Priscilla, on July 28, 2022 at 3:56 PM Posted in Texas Planning 0 2

Hi! I got married almost 3 months ago and I'm finally getting around to changing my name. I want to keep my maiden name somewhere in my legal name. My preference is to have two last names, but I'm also considering making my maiden name my middle name. I read in another thread on here that in Texas you can't have two last names - you can either hyphenate or just use one. Does anyone know if this is accurate?

Thanks!

Hmm, I am in Texas as well and I don’t think this is true. I have a coworker who recently married and she has two last names. It’s changed on her drivers license and her other documents. I am planning to hyphenate my last name.

It’s actually a character limit in the last name (52 I think). So depending on how long both of them are, you may or may not be able to have both as officially your last name. If your middle name is shorter, that would be a good place to add in your maiden name.
