Changed feelings on maid of honor

Rachel, on February 27, 2020 at 11:28 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 9

My maid of honor have been friends more or less since we were about 10 years old; I'm 30 now. She's always been kind of different, seems like a rather insecure person and she is never satisfied where she goes in life. She puts up a lot of rules for herself whereas I'm more of a go-with-the-flow kind of personality. My fiance has never really cared for her all that much and my mom has always felt pretty iffy of her too. But it wasn't really until my bachelorette party that I had this past weekend that I saw her in a completely new light.

I caught her in a lie several times, and also she was really drunk and she got angry at me for trying to give her water. She also got upset about losing her card (which she lost 3 times total during the course of the evening), and she kept insisting I had it when I didn't. When she was crying I was trying to comfort her and she actually pushed me away, and told me not to call her "honey," because that's what I do when I am trying to comfort someone.

The next day, I tried to talk to her again and she said she thought I was being annoying and insisted that I refused to find her card. She wouldn't cancel her card like I told her to (we were in VEGAS), and she had backup cards anyway. I tried to lighten the mood and she was not having it. Also, she apologized for pushing me, but it was the most insincere apology.

Now it's nearly been 4 days and I am still deeply bothered by her behavior since she's supposed to be my maid of honor! When she was sober, she'd ask me questions like, "If X were to leave you at the altar, how would he do it?"

I'm getting married in 2 weeks now and I'm like... I need advice here. I honestly feel like I'm over it. My fiance suggested I wait a week to make a decision but I feel like I know, but it feels so complicated with the wedding so soon. Help.

Are you looking to ask her to step down as moh and be a guest OR are you asking for advice about the friendship? Do you even at this point want to continue being friends? Think about why she is even your BFF or MOH to begin with and see if that’s worth salvaging

My mom does not know the whole story, but she does ask me if she wants my MOH to really be the one who stands up for me at my wedding. And honestly, no, I don't. Our friendship has not flourished, but fizzled out. I would tell her that I care about our friendship, but she never reciprocates. She just does not seem to care about me or wish me happiness. She just wants to drink and party and dance. And I'm just in a totally different place.

I asked her out of obligation because we've been friends so long.

I mean, I think you're a little too close to the wedding to do anything at this point.

The wedding is not the pinnacle of your friendship with her--you can go through the motions and just enjoy yourself without focusing on her. Honestly, you don't really have to interact much one-on-one with her if you don't want to. After the wedding, it sounds like it'll be easy to let the natural fizzle continue. If you're truly good with nixing the friendship, it'll be much easier to do so after the wedding.

If you're 1000% over it (which I'm trying to gauge if you are, seeing as you posted to ask for advice about it instead of uninviting her to the wedding/bridal party right then and there), then you can do the more drastic thing of totally uninviting her. That may cause more stress than it's worth in the two weeks before your wedding, though.

Your bachelorette was the first time she's ever acted this way toward you? Drunk or otherwise?

Thank you for your advice!! So helpful.

Yes, I think I will be busy enough with other things to not be around all that. I'm trying very hard to move past it but I just haven't talked about it with anyone quite yet so it's just building up, and I just need some feedback.

Yes, I think I'll just continue through the wedding, and then let the natural fizzle take place. It sounds easier than doing anything different such as uninviting her or demoting her.

No, it's not the first time she's acted this way. She is like this every time I see her to an extent, such as getting mad when I try to get her to drink water, or wanting to argue about small things or making rude comments to me. This was the first time she's ever laid a hand on me though. I told her the next day that it really upset me because I have been in an abusive relationship before, so it really left me very unsettled, and I continue to feel that way.

Do you have others in your bridal party that you can trust to talk to about this? I think it’s kind of late to uninvite her, but you can ask another bridesmaid to kind of step in politely and reel her in on your wedding day if things get out of hand. You’ll only really have to spend the first portion of your day with her because once the reception hits you’ll be so busy you won’t be able to pay attention to her. Sounds to me a bit like she’s jealous of you too, maybe you have something she wants and she is acting out instead of talking about it. Not that it makes anything okay, just a little different perspective.

It's funny you mentioned the acting out because that's how I saw it immediately. I even told her that (in a polite way), and she walked away from me. My other friend said she seemed to be jealous since all the attention was on me and didn't like it. I feel that it is awfully petty, but merely reflects her own insecurities on where she is in her life. And I think she's projecting it onto me.

I don't have anyone else in my bridal party unfortunately. I have a very small wedding. However, my sister-in-law was there, and I know I can count on her to do that for me. So thank you for suggesting that! That morning, it'll be my mom, MOH, and myself getting ready at the salon.

Well I’m sure your mom won’t let her ruin your special day either!!! It does sound a lot to me like she’s just jealous. I’m sorry this is happening though, it’s really crappy when people can’t just be happy for you Smiley sad. But we all are!

So sorry you're dealing with this--it's not at all ideal for where you're at in relation to the wedding (and beyond, of course).

I should have said this in my last comment--I wouldn't be able to forgive someone for getting physical with me. Some people aren't great drunks (we all know one): some fall asleep everywhere (me), some are super dancey, some are flirty, some get quite sad, and a few get angry. It's VERY okay for you not to want that in your life. I am so sorry about your past relationship--that moment was probably extremely triggering for you. I really would not blame you in the slightest for disinviting her from the wedding for that.

I'm glad you're able to vent here. The natural fizzle may be the path of least resistance, which is the main reason I recommended it, as not to add another big stressor of "breaking up" with a friend to this period of time.

    Congrats! Enjoy your big day!

I feel for you.. I am going through something similar.. my MOH got pregnant.. and now says she cant afford to go on a bachelorette party in 7 months.. she cant save $30 a month? And she makes over $100k a year.. buys expensive stuff all the time.. i just sent her a $200 rocker and now she wants to be selfish.. it really hurts.. i asked her if she would be able to save for the dress.. im not having an expensive wedding.. she just got pissed at me and so I said i think we have grown out of this friendship.
