Change to small wedding?

Lea, on April 24, 2020 at 12:17 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

My fiancé and I have made the choice to change our June 27th wedding to just immediate family and bridal party due to the pandemic. Now I'm having to shift gears from planning a wedding of 200 people to a wedding of 20. I'm struggling to figure out what the reception should look like. It will be in the same place as the ceremony, my parents' farm that I grew up on. Our close friend is our caterer, and he has said he still wants to cook a meal for everyone.

Those of you who had, or are planning small weddings, what did your reception look like?

I had a DW with 15 guests. The reception seemed pretty typical... cocktail hour, dinner, dessert. We had a musician for cocktail hour. We skipped a DJ/dancing because that wasn’t our crowd’s thing. But it was like one big loud dinner party.

This is absolutely a "read your crowd" thing.

Would that group want dancing, or would they prefer just some nice music to go under their socializing? Would they want games?

I'm sorry you have to downsize!

Thank you! That’s a good way of thinking about it and definitely helps clarify my vision for what it should look like.

Okay, that’s helpful to know. I was curious if we should have the same kind of structure as a large reception-but thinking of it as a big dinner party helps clarify my vision. Thank you!

You're welcome. Perhaps because I'm older, but over the last 10 years I've been to a handful of smaller weddings (40-50 guests) with no DJ/dancing, garter/bouquet toss, etc., but the receptions were filled with great food, drinks and laughter. Those gave me confidence about planning our reception.

    Hi Lea,

I'm so sorry your plans have changed. If I were in your shoes, I would structure it the same as a larger reception. Have a nice dinner, allow for music and dancing, as well! I think your guests will love all of the detail.

I'm certain you and your partner will do what is best for you!

Sending love of love your way.

    Smiley heart
