Change the Date Advice

Lauren, on July 22, 2020 at 9:50 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

Last night my partner and I made the very difficult decision to cut our guest list to only our wedding party and parents/grandparents. This is taking us from 65 guests down to 19 guests. We are still going to use our venue (since it was geared toward a smaller group anyway), but next summer we are planning to rent a local park and do a faux ceremony and more casual reception. We were already planning on doing a second reception as we wanted to keep the formal numbers low, so it's a little easier for us to make the change but we're trying to figure out how to communicate to our guests.

Our original STDs are magnets with six rectangles; five are photos and one has our names, the date, and the location. I was going to make stickers that fit over the info rectangle with the new date and location (since it will be an entirely different city/state next year), but we still need to include a card with the explanation of why we made the decision. We don't plan on publicizing the fact that we are still getting married because we know that some people may not show up next year if they don't think it's a real wedding (we want them there because we love them, not with any ulterior motive of gifts - we just have some people who avoid social situations and we really want to celebrate with them). We are also very laid-back and all of our stationary has been kind of jokey, so we want to keep with that theme. Examples: our STDs started with "STD: It's Forever" and our invites started with "Finally doing the thing!" because after 10 years people would literally ask when we were going to "do the thing and get married".

Anyone have fun, upbeat wording that we can print on some card stock and send with the sticker?

So, change of plans. It turns out that 9/12/20 isn't really going to work for us.

Place this sticker on the [describe location] of the magnet so you can be there when we finally do the thing.
OR ... so we'll all be available on that date. (As if you had to reschedule because the original date was just a bit inconvenient.)

Then when you send out your invitations, you can say, "we're finally doing the thing. For real this time!"

I love this suggested wording!!! 🙌

You could even do "Change of Plans" or "Roll With It" as a header on the card!

We went with: "There's always one "C word" that ruins the party." as the header for most of them. The ones that went to older relatives had the suggested, "Turns out 9/12/2020 isn't going to work for us."
We then added words to explain why we chose to move the date, and reminded people that they should be excited to keep seeing our faces on their fridge for another year.

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
