Ceremony/reception Timeline

Rosa, on December 2, 2019 at 1:41 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
Both our ceremony and reception are taking place in the same room. We rented our local VFW hall for 5 hours as we are on a tight budget. It works for us because we are very laid back, casual and not traditional. Ceremony will be at 5pm and will be short and sweet and the reception will follow immediately. This is the timeline I was thinking:

5pm - Ceremony

5:20pm - First Dance

5:30pm - BM & MOH Speeches

5:45pm - Cake Cutting

6:00pm - Dinner (Buffet)

6:45pm - Dancing

Would this work? A few notes - there will be no parent dances because both our moms do not like to be front and center and there are no dads, so we only need our first dance. As for the cake cutting, we are only having a small 6 inch cake for display (from a local supermarket) and a sheet cake for our guests. I figured cutting the cake before dinner would work out because I will have the sheet cake already cut and put out with the buffet for guests to grab with dinner.

The only thing I would consider changing is the speeches. Most weddings I've been to they are at the end of the dinner. I personally like it this way because as a guest, I still have something to do (aka finishing my dinner) while they are talking. That way everyone isn't just sitting and listening like a presentation or something lol. It would still work where you have it, just a thought!

I agree with PP that speeches are better at the end of dinner. That way your guests are able to eat while listening instead of hoping they’ll end so that they can get to the buffet.

I would be flexible with your start of dancing. Depending on how many people 45 minutes for dinner including time to go through buffet might be pushing it.

@Keri You're completely right. I wasn't factoring in the buffet line time. But we're completely flexible with dinner & dancing time!!

Your dinner should be atleast 1 hour especially you are doing Buffet style. Not every table would go up to the buffet at once.
