Ceremony too late for good photos?

Samantha, on September 4, 2019 at 9:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
I have decided on a venue and am ready to put down a deposit, my only issue is the ceremony doesn't start until 6:30 and sunset will be at 6:12. Will it be too late by then to get good photos? Anyone have experience with a later ceremony?

Depends on your definition of good photos. With sunset at 6:12, there may be reasonable light for another hour before it feels too dark...and that could be cut even shorter if there are a lot of trees or mountains on the horizon, or clouds in the sky. If your ceremony doesn't start until 6:30 and lasts 20 minutes, you'll likely have less than 30 minutes before it feels too dark for outdoor pictures that will show the surroundings.

Or do a first look and take lots of pictures before the ceremony!

It will likely be dark by then. But that doesn’t mean the photos won’t be amazing! We actually purposefully scheduled our ceremony AFTER sunset so we could get nighttime photos! We will have lots of candlelight and twinkle lights in the trees. Just google or look on Pinterest/instagram for nighttime wedding photos and see if you like them. If not, you may want to consider moving your ceremony time up.

If the photographer is good enough and has light kit, you should be fine

I know people who went back the next day dressed up again to do photos

Speak with your venue about times. Our venue has a standard ceremony time of 6pm, but as our wedding is in 2 weeks and we want some sunset pics if possible, we decided to move it up to 5:30. If you can’t move the time up, do a first look and take all pictures before hand

Do pictures before the ceremony! Most venues give you the whole day. Our ceremony doesn’t start until 3pm but everyone helping with the wedding, in the wedding, including vendors are allowed to be there at 8am. I’m planning on doing the first look and wedding party pictures before the ceremony that way after the ceremony for cocktail hour and the reception I can focus on enjoying the moment with everyone than getting pictures!
