Ceremony then come back and have a reception?

If a very small guest list or elopement for the ceremony, that seems fine. If guests are invited to both, that would be odd and you may get a high decline rate for one or both events. Plus, you do need to host some kind of reception for ceremony guests, even if just cake & punch.

You would still need to host something for the people attending your wedding ceremony. Even if its just cake and punch (at a non-meal time!). I personally don't understand the appeal of doing what youre suggesting, but it doesn't mean you can't.
