Ceremony Script: Vows question

FutureMrsQ2017, on September 26, 2017 at 4:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some advice about putting together our ceremony script and am having some troubles communicating my thoughts to our officiant. We took bits and pieces from different scripts and put them together.

My most pressing question is...If you your your FH/FW choose to write your own vows, do you also recite the traditional vows such as " I _____, take you _____, to be my ...."

Or do you forgo those all together. We want to write vows to each other and also recite the traditional ones. Is this not normal if you write your own vows? I'm having some issues communicating this correctly with my officiant and I think I must be stating it wrong.

What have you all done? What do you think is normal?

Most weddings I've been to, they've done both. They do the traditional ones first and then the officiant invites them to share the ones they've wrote.

We did both. I can't remember the order we did them, lol.

We didn't do personal vows, but i've been to many weddings that have done both. there are a couple of pieces that they HAVE to keep in in order to make it legal (ie in my province the "impediment query" where they ask if anyone objects has to stay in).

We did our script with some input from officiant. If you look at a some sample scripts online you can see what some other have done. The first example I think is the easiest to understand. I think you can do both.

My FH and I worked together to write vows that we would both say. I have included what we put below.

____, you are my best friend. Today I give myself to you in marriage. I look forward to growing with you as a couple, and each day I get to spend with you as my partner. I take you as you are, loving who you are now and who you are yet to become. I vow to support your dreams and ambitions, and to be your partner in all things by working with you as part of a whole.

    We also included the traditional:

___, do you take ___ to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?

@ariadne and @emma thank you! I thought it was fine to use both. I think I was saying the wrong thing to her and put the personally written vows portion in the wrong spot (where the readings would go if we did them).

We did the legal vows first then personal ones then religious. We also had the officiant insert some of our favorite movie lines. He opened with "Maiwage, mawaige is what bwings us twogethew twoday..." from the princess bride and in the "do you take this woman..." he added "and promise not to blast her off into space... until such time as you grow weary of her..." from Flash Gordon! Everyone loved it and the minister had alot of fun with it as well, he was laughing and losing his place!
