Ceremony Reading

Kayy, on June 13, 2017 at 8:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Hello everyone! One of the last things on my list is to pick a reading for the ceremony. My FH's uncle will be reading it. The pastor sent me a bunch of ideas but they aren't sitting well with me, too mushy or too religious for our taste. What are you all using? Any suggestions?

My friend read the ee cummings poem "you are tired". Another Cummings poem, "I carry your heart" is very popular for weddings

I'm using a blessing for marriage. It's not religious

My grandmother is doing the reading at ours. She is picking a passage from the bible. She is going to let me know when she decides so we can read over it together. I trust her to find the perfect thing that will fit me and my fh and I know it will be special.

This is one of my readings. I love how it captures the realities of loving a person daily and through everything. Maybe it's a bit sad but I loved it.

Here's what we're using, if you're not in a male/female relationship, you may have to alter the wording at the end of the second reading.

Love is an Adventure by Pierre Tielhart de Chardin

“Love is an adventure and a conquest. It survives and develops like the universe itself only by perpetual discovery. The only right love is that between couples whose passion leads them both, one through the other, to a higher possession of their being. Put your faith in the spirit which dwells between the two of you. You have each offered yourself to the other as a boundless field of understanding, of enrichment, of mutually increased sensibility. You will meet above all by entering into and constantly sharing one another’s thoughts, affections, and dreams. There alone, as you know, in spirit, which is arrived through flesh, you will find no disappointments, no limits. There alone the skies are ever open for your love; there alone lies the great road ahead.”

    From “Union” by Robert Fulghum

“You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making promises and agreements in an informal way. All those conversations that were held riding in a car or over a meal or during long walks – all those sentences that began with “When we’re married” and continued with “I will and you will and we will”- those late night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe”- and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding. The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “ You know all those things we’ve promised and hoped and dreamed- well, I meant it all, every word.” Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another- acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, and even teacher, for you have learned much from one another in these last few years. Now you shall say a few words that take you across a threshold of life, and things will never quite be the same between you. For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this- is my husband, this- is my wife ”

We did 2 readings. One was Corinthians 13, the other was "Union" by Robert Fulghum:

"You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making commitments in an informal way. All of those conversations that were held in a car, or over a meal, or during long walks – all those conversations that began with, “When we’re married”, and continued with “I will” and “you will” and “we will” – all those late night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe” – and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding.

The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “You know all those things that we’ve promised, and hoped, and dreamed – well, I meant it all, every word.”

Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another – acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, even teacher, for you have learned much from one another these past few years. Shortly you shall say a few words that will take you across a threshold of life, and things between you will never quite be the same.

For after today you shall say to the world –

This is my husband. This is my wife."

We're doing an excerpt from "The Little Prince" and a love letter from Abigail Adams to John Adams.
