Ceremony Music

Emily, on September 25, 2023 at 2:18 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 4

Has anyone had issues with not being able to use the music you want for a church ceremony? My fiancé was insistent on getting married in his Lutheran church (I personally had no preference) but I'm wondering if we are going to have issues with not being able to choose the songs we want played for walking down the aisle and what not. Our last marriage class/meeting with the pastor is tomorrow night but I have had so much anxiety about if this will be an issue or not. We are having a pianist and no singer, so I would think it wouldn't be an issue. I personally am just not as religious as he is so I was not sure if this is something I should worry about or not. The pastor that is officiating the wedding refuses to discuss any planning or wedding details until the last meeting, I'm a huge planner so this has been a struggle for me lol.

With that said, has anyone had any issues in a Lutheran Church choosing music?

There are various Lutheran groups. The music for a pianist probably wouldn't pose any problem unless the pianist pulls out an electric guitar for that song. Is the song pretty moderate in its theme/words? I don't think generally that they would be much restrictive on the music.

Yes, I'd day the song is moderate. We would just have the pianist no other instruments. We originally asked the pastor on if they were okay maybe 6 months ago, but he would not give us an answer and just stated we are way ahead of ourselves planning so soon. I couldn't tell if that was him saying no to the songs we chose or if he really just wanted to wait until we got this close to let us know.

You need to speak with the church-employed musicians about what is allowed. Generally Lutheran churches only allow music found in the hymnals

The ECLA Lutheran group provided this information that might be a start.

The idea is that pastors can view the wedding as worship by the guests and want music compatible with that worship.

The LCMS Lutheran hymns are here.

It seems that your music was possibly not a hymn. So it depends on the pastor whether that is acceptable.
