CEREMONY HELP! Are you having ushers to seat your guests? Or are they seating themselves?

lindsay, on January 14, 2015 at 11:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 41

I was talking with my mom the other day about roles in the wedding, the processional for the ceremony etc. and she informed me that I should have ushers (2 of the groomsmen) be ushers to help seat people....I had no idea about this. Probably because I have really only been to a few weddings when I was younger.

So my question is do people still do this? Is this an old tradition? Are you doing this or are people just coming and seating themselves?

TIA!

We are having ushers seat our guests and the ceremony and also help them locate their seats at the reception.

My brother will be an usher because my ceremony space only seats 60 and the rest is standing room only (not thrilled about this but it is what it is). He will make sure the older guests have seats.

Yes our groomsmen were ushers. They reminded guests to sign our guest book, passed out programs, showed guests to their seats (not separated between my side and his), and they politely reminded guests it was an unplugged ceremony. There were 6 of them including the Best Man.

FH wants ushers because I have more guests on my side than he does, but our wedding will be very laid back so I don't think we need any. We still have a year to battle this out. I will win.

I had 2 good guy friends I wanted involved so I asked them to be ushers. We wanted ushers to help seat people because our invites are lopsided toward mg side and I want both sides of the church full.

Yes, our groomsmen will be ushers. At the weddings that i've been to, this is usually the rule of the groomsmen any way....

We will have our brothers be ushers (one of whom is not a GM). I haven't decided yet if they will usher all guests or just the moms/ grandmothers. If we usher all guests, all the groomsmen plus my bro will be ushers, though I am leaning towards all guests. We have lopsided guest lists and I think its easier to find seats for families when you aren't restricted by a side and I want the guests to know they are welcome to sit anywhere without a cheesy sign.

Our GM will pull double duty and escort the guests to their seats.

The groomsmen will be acting as greeters/ushers. We still haven't decided if we will have them actually seating people or just have them greeting people as they arrive and handing out programs.

I did not want to , however my FH niece is 8 & has brought up being in the wedding every time I see her, finally I just told her I would find something for her to do, she REALLY wants to be involved, but I already have a FG & don't really need anything else, so I'm going to have her & her brother (who is 9) hand out programs & greet people upon arrival to ceremony site.

It totality unneeded, however, I don't want to her her feelings. & my FH is very close to his sister, her her 3rd child is our RB, so I hate to leave them out.

We're having ushers, but I think it's mostly because FH wanted to honor two of his friends that didn't fit in the wedding party. It's entirely up to you.

We'll have ushers directing people to the guest book. explaining the smoking rules and what not but they wont be actually walking people to their seat.

We are going to have our 3 nephews as "ushers" but only for out mothers, grandmothers and aunts. they are 10, 9 & 9. Everyone else can seat themselves. Its an outdoor garden wedding. And up till about September I had no idea what the heck an usher was other than the super hot dancing music star. LOL
