Just Said Yes November 2022

Ceremony, but already married.

Tabitha, on May 13, 2021 at 3:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 18
Hi Everyone,

Just wondering what you think or have any ideas. My husband and I got married last month via virtual. But we want to have a ceremony and a reception in Puerto Rico for our friends and family. Is it worth it? Does anyone know how that would work? We don’t need another marriage license, but I would love to walk down the aisle with my papa.

What you are describing is a renewal of vows. Typically they are done for milestone anniversaries (10th. 25th, etc)

Thank you. So we should still get an officiant and ask for a renewal of vows for ceremony? Or do we get a priest? Sorry this is all new to me 😬

I would plan it as you want. It doesn’t matter when or how long you wait. I’ve seen couples precious so this and have a larger celebration and vow renewal shortly after eloping or getting married.

Because you aren’t doing anything legally at this point, any friend or relative good at public speaking can perform the ceremony. Oftentimes clergy will not agree to officiate for that reason.

We are doing the same. Our guests are expecting the wedding pomp and circumstance, so to speak, and my dad would like to walk me down the aisle. We hired an officiant and are treating it like a commitment ceremony. There won't be vows or a vow renewal (it feels silly to us to do that before our 1 year anniversary) but the service itself will still be special and unique.

Aww that’s nice to hear. Congrats to you too! 😊 We didn’t get to do our vows, with our ceremony being virtual we thought it was weird to do it with just one witness, so the minister did it for us. Happy to hear that I’m not the only one going this route 😊. Thank you!

I think this is pretty normal and you should be able to celebrate exactly the way that you and your husband want to. A lot of COVID brides are going this route so people definitely understand. I think everything can be the same as a typical wedding ceremony but you would just want to be mindful of the language you use to describe things (no pronouncement of marriage, “welcome you the celebrate the marriage of...”, etc.).

You can plan whatever you want. If you are legally married already there are no requirements for what your ceremony needs to look like. You can make it 100% look like a regular wedding ceremony where you say "I dos" and exchange rings and kiss at the end, there's just no papers to sign after, or you can adjust it to reflect you are already married.

If you are involving a professional or religious officiant, you should let them know you are already legally married.

Jamie Wolfer on YouTube and recently did a video on the semantics of this. Call it your wedding-you do NOT have to stoop and call it a vow renewal. It’s not, you were denied the option of having a wedding among thousands of us.

Hi Alyssa. Thank you! I will
Have to check out the video. We will definitely have to talk to an officiant in Puerto Rico. I wonder if they’ll charge the same price for their services even if nothing has to be filed..

You could even have a friend do the ceremony and look up wording or wrote it yourself. You can make it as personal as you want. It would be awesome and you could potentially save the officiant fee if there is a special friend who was willing and a good speaker Smiley smile

My husband and I are doing the same, actually many covid brides are. We legally got married at a minimony October 2020 and our big wedding was pushed to March 2021. Unfortunately that too was postponed because the numbers were still high so now we will get to have our big wedding October 2021. My dad will walk me down the aisle again.

We are currently making the same plans for Puerto Rico for June 2022. We plan to make it official before we arrive. Congratulations and happy planning.
