Centerpiece using lime slices...anyone familiar with technique?

lauralei39, on February 22, 2009 at 2:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I'm having a post wedding party 2 wks after our wedding day(wedding is private, immediate family only, then off to honeymoon). It is in an enclosed park pavillion, catered, buffet style. Picnic tables will be have white linen table cloths. This is all DIY for decorations. I have 8" wide bubble vases, pink, white and green silk flowers and want to put lime slices in the vase, water and the flowers coming out of the top. Anyone try doing this? Any ideas on how to do it? I hear soaking limes in water makes them not float.

No experience (yet), but I'm eagerly awaiting people's responses to your question Smiley smile Pictures of the lemon/lime centerpieces are always so beautiful!

My sister did something similar for her Wedding with oranges, but hired a florist to do these for her. I can post a pic of what her's looked like on my message board for you to get an idea of it.

These both show a picture of flower arrangements with the fruit, but it gives you an idea on how tp o put them together. Hope they help you.

To hold the slices to the side of the vase try filling it with clear glass rocks like these: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/cleargems.html It will also help hold the silk flowers up. Then just fill it with water so the limes dont dry out Smiley smile

Also try slicing the limes as thin as possible an overlapping them for a really nice look like this http://www.gandabaccha.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/lime-2dfresh-2dwallpaper.jpg

Also just another centerpiece idea to go along side the flowers:

You may not need the floral foam if you're using silk flowers unless you're trying to give them height. If you can get some vases or bowls that are smaller that will fit inside the other vases you have you can have those hidden on the inside with the flowers coming out. Just make sure you put water in the outer vase for the limes. You can probably get a watering can or use a measuring cup to fill the water inside just that area. From what I read, the juices from the fruit should help them stick to look out from the inside of the vases.

I have done this recently at a wedding I coordinated. You can alternate whole limes and add slices as well. This is a beautiful look, fresh and fun...

All these ideas are great. Gabby, I couldn't get to the website you posted about the idea to go alone with my centerpiece! It said the page had an error. I like the layered limes, but how the heck do you get them to stay all nice and neat that way when working in such a confined space.

I like the idea of another vase inside the bubble bowls I already have, but the floal foam might be a better idea so I can get some height. It seems like it might be easier to work the limes around it too. I'll have to practice techniques and see what works. I have some lemons I can work with this weekend. I also have 7" cylinder vases to use on either side of the floral centerpiece...a ways down the table (long picnic tables) that I am going to put on a round mirror tile, put some colored sparkly fuschia gems in the bottom and lime slices floating in water and a floating candle on top, and sprinkle freeze dried flower petals around the base of it. My colors are pink and green. More ideas?

Here is a different link to that picture hopefully it will work

(you could add pink filament instead of sliver for a more customized look)

I think to get that thin layered look it would be easiest to put some of the rocks (or foam) and water in first and then arrange the first few rows of limes,(arranging them with chopsticks or bamboo skewers) then add more rocks and water and do the next row slices etc til you reach the top.. then add the flowers.

Also you don't have to use the fancy clear glass chunks... we are just using large fish gravel Smiley winking

    Dear Lauralei

Have you take a look at water crystal or water gel or polymer crystals? You can use those to put the lime or lemon slices in place in the vase and add your flowers to the arrangement. You should check it out http://www.water-keep.com/ go to the bottom of the page about how to use it for crafts.

    Best,

    Yvonne
