Celiac/Gluten Free Party Food Ideas?

Kelsey, on June 5, 2015 at 1:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I have several relatives with Celiacs Disease coming to the reception, does anyone here have any favourite gluten free party foods to recommend?

My Mom has Celiacs - so a lot of our cocktail hour items were selected with her in mind. We had a carving station (ham and pork loin), shrimp cocktail, fruit and cheeses, fresh salads, etc. There's tons of options out there. Pretty much anything with a sauce or gravy is going to have gluten in it.

No suggestions and I'm not sure if you're aware buuut GF/celiac is a sensitive topic on this board this week as there was a very controversial, drama filled thread about it the other day. That may be the reason you're not getting very many replies. I would try to ask this again in a couple days/weeks but also try googling it before you post again. And if you chose to post again, whatever you do, don't mention GF lasagna

Will you have a summer or winter wedding? If you're thinking of appetizers, there's bocconcini salad (cherry tomatoes and bocconcini cheese balls), prosciutto-wrapped cantaloupe, veggie trays and dip, meatballs (we're having meatballs as appetizer but you may have to serve them without gravy), cheese trays, chocolate fountains with fruit/marshmallows...

Kelsey- the issue with the other thread was the OP wanted to use frozen lasagna as her GF meal.

You should discuss this with your catering manager. He or she will have suggestions of gluten free foods that they make well.

And because it was mentioned here and in the other thread, meatballs are not gluten free. They have breadcrumbs in them. There are ways to make them gf, but I guarantee you that basic balls or loafs of meat at any given restaurant are made with wheat flour.

I was for a while not having gluten in an effort to diagnose my issue. Also I went to a friends wedding who has celiac and most of their food was gluten free so she could eat it. Bacon wrapped scallops, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, meatballs (appetizer) made without any gluten, devilled eggs. They had fruit and cheeses, salads, a seafood stir fry station, chicken, most types of meat or fish just not with sauces that contain gluten. Most do but there are some that can be made gluten free. For a full meal type deal meat/fish and rice or potatoes but no gravy. Just some examples.

What Jacqui said. Our venue's chef prepared my son a gluten/diary/peanut free meal that was outstanding. It was grilled salmon and chicken breast, mashed potatoes and veggies. They also have an area in the kitchen that avoids cross contamination.

There was an issue with frozen gluten free lasagna, not gluten free food in general! Haha.

You can basically have anything you want gluten free. Our entire wedding is gf. If you have a caterer they will definitely be able to help you.

GF/Celiac isn't controversial here? It was the fact that someone thought GF frozen lasagna would work for that guest. Talk to your venue/caterer, they usually can help. You won't be the first person with the issue. Ours had to have at least half the food be GF because I can't have it and neither can one of my guests (maybe more not sure).

Some venues/caterers are better than others with this but I wouldn't worry about it too much

Yea as long as you don't want to know the best frozen lasagna to feed to your celiac guests - GF/celiacs is a non-controversial issue. Talk to your caterer.

@Jacqui I had no clue (clearly I've never made meatballs in my life, shame on me). I'm glad you pointed that out, thanks!

@VC I don't think you are the only one who thinks meatballs are safe. I actually didn't know that you could get meatballs made by someone else...I thought they were always made from scratch until I saw a bag of them in a friend's freezer. I was pretty shocked lol. If you've never made them and don't get sick from gluten I guess there is no way you would know!

@Jacqui an Italian grocery store in my city makes them fresh every day, that's where I get them. I did know that meat loaf has bread though, so now I feel really silly for not putting two and two together. I don't know if we'll have any celiac guests but given that we're serving meatballs I'm glad I know this now!

As long as its not frozen lasagna, you're fine! Smiley tongue

Seriously, talk to your caterer and see what they recommend.

My caterer said they could do stuffed mushrooms with gluten-free breadcrumbs, that taste basically exactly like the regular ones. They also suggested making a small selection of GF stuff for the few people who request it, rather than converting a bunch of your stuff to GF (or vegetarian, or any other food preference)
