Catholic Wedding

Stefanie, on September 6, 2020 at 8:40 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

Hi guys,

So my fiance and I are catholic but do not want to get married at a church. We are choosing the get married onsite at our venue, but want our marriage to be recognized as a catholic wedding. Does anyone know how we would go about doing that? Thanks in advance

I believe you would have to find officiant willing to marry you outside of the church.

I would check and see if a catholic priest will be willing to marry you outside the church but with the same traditions. I am Christian so I do not think Baptist or Christian pastors are as strict about it needing to be in the church. Not sure if there is a way to google or Thumbtack that for your area or if there is a facebook group for weddings where you could pose that question.

Talk to your priest. I know people who are catholic who have gotten married outside.

You would have to apply for a dispensation requesting the ability to marry by a priest outside of the church. Some bishops are willing to do this, but I wouldn’t count on it. You could also see if a convalidation would be possible after your wedding, which would bless your wedding in the Catholic Church after you’re married.

Sorry but from my understanding - you CANNOT have catholic, religiously recognized ceremony outside of the church. It MUST be within church walls.

Maybe you could have a religious/legal ceremony in the church sometime prior to the wedding, and do a symbolic ceremony on the wedding day.

DH's priest told us, in no uncertain terms, that a priest cannot marry anyone outside of the church.

Please remember that you must also do precana (we did, I am not Christian, it was poorly run, and very unhelpful... the priest declined to marry us based on this).

You can get your marriage recognized by the Church in a different ceremony, but it is NOT a wedding.
