Catholic Wedding Schedule

Brittany, on May 27, 2020 at 11:43 PM Posted in Planning 1 3

I've looked all over and most wedding schedules are your typical schedules for Saturday weddings with the reception and ceremony at the same place. So the bullet points of our situation:

• Friday wedding, full Catholic mass

• Reception venue is 10.5 miles from the church

• We'll be getting ready at the reception venue so we can do 'first look' pictures, bridal party pics, and family pictures.

• We have the photographer for 8 hours and have to shut the music off at the reception venue at 11pm.

Those are the biggest factors I think. Has anyone had a similar situation? Anybody have suggestions?

Hi! Catholic bride here as well. I think the biggest factor that we have to consider is not leaving too much time in between the mass and ceremony and reception. Allowing enough travel time to allow your guests to get from the church to the venue and yourself too to take the pictures (if you're taking any after as well since you mentioned you're doing a first look).

And also letting your guests aware that your ceremony is a full mass and what that entails, meaning it's not just a 10 minute ceremony. I'm not sure how it is in your case, but most of my friends and family aren't all Catholic so making them aware of mass and also I made note to tell my priest that so he can guide everyone along the usual practices of mass (kneeling, communion, etc.)

What time is your ceremony supposed to start?

Don't have a gap. If you plan to take more pictures between the ceremony and reception, you should host your guests during that time with a cocktail hour (that's the purpose of cocktail hour).

Hi Brittany! Which part of your timeline do you need help with?

You always want to start with the fixed times and then work backwards to see when you'll need to start getting ready! Is there a specific start time for your ceremony? Or a certain number of hours you have your reception venue for? (Or a limited number of hours you want the bar open?)

For example if 11pm is your fixed end time you can start a rough timeline by working backwards from there: the average reception length is about 4 hours with 1 hour of 'cocktail hour' so you could put 7pm as a tentative reception start time and 6 for cocktail hour. From there subtract the travel time between venues (with a generous buffer!) and then expected length of your service (probably 1 hour) - and you're looking at a 4-4:30 ceremony start time.
