Catholic wedding help I have no clue on songs

Linda, on May 12, 2017 at 1:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Hey all,

For anyone whose getting married in a church or has maybe you could assist me. I've asked my priest a few times but he never gives me a final answer lol. Anyway how many songs did you have and in what order. We are having a ceremony not a full mass, every time I google this I find links for full mass so I'm rather confused. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

ETA: I would like to add that we will most likely have two songs for the entrance or groom and bridal party and one for me. But that's all I got for now lol thanks

We had The Prayer for processional and All I Ask of You for the recessional.

This was sung at a catholic wedding I went to last year. I was kinda floored because this is usually sung as the bride is entering the church in my tradition. It was sung when the bride went to the Virgin Mary towards the end of the service. The choir really needs some good chops though to pull that off.

Since you aren't having a full mass I think you have a little more leeway.

Svetlana, at most Catholic ceremonies I have been to, that song is used for the presentation to Mary.

In the Orthodox Church we don't do that and it was the first time I ever attended a catholic wedding and heard it sung as Ave Maria, I am used to the Russian/Slavonic version.

Yeah we will definitely be doing the ave maria Ana w are offering a bouquet to the virgin. So far I have I can only imagine for the bridal party, And Canon In D for me. But I am having a hard time figuring out how many songs I would need throughout the entire ceremony. I know we need a Recessional song also

I am getting married in the Greek Orthodox church but since my FH is Catholic, the priest is allowing Catholic music to be sung during the entrance and exit (acappella). We are still choosing some of the songs, but I am walking down the aisle to Ave Maria. My SIL had Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring during her procession...I would google that one. It was beautiful.

Does your church have a music director? That's who we'll be working with to determine how many songs are needed and what not.

We used Prayer of St. Francis, Now With Thanksgiving and When Love is Found (Haas) as our prelude songs, Prelude to the Te Deum (Charpentier) for our moms, Trumpet Voluntary (Clark) as our processional song, One Bread, One Body (Foley) for Communion, Ave Maria (Schubert) for Meditation to the Virgin Mary and Symphony No. 9: Ode to Joy (Beethoven) for our recessional.

We had the St. Francis prayer as well, a favorite.

Also Hosea (Come Back to Me).

    Non mass catholic here

    1.Prelude

    2.Processional

    3.Responsorial Psalm

    4.Recessional

They went over the music with us when they went over where to find all the readings and everything. They also sent us a list of approved music. We also had to fill out a sheet with the order of the ceremony, readings, songs exc. I'm surprised they are not helping you more.

@Diana that what I was talking about above! Listen to my youtube link if you haven't already. I actually think it can be sung in Greek as well.

Because you aren't doing the full Mass, you won't actually need that many songs. MNBride has the right number, and then you'll add in the Mary song. So 5 in total Smiley smile

Bridal Party: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach

Bridal Processional: Te Deum by Charpentier

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103 - The Lord Is Kind and Merciful by Haugen

Offertory: Bist du bei mir by Bach

    Communion: Panis Angelicus by Frank

Marian Dedication: Ave Maria by Gounod

Recessional: Ode to Joy by Beethoven

This is my list (for a full mass, but it might give you some church-friendly song ideas). We picked from a list provided by the church's music director.

My donation to the church included an organist and a singer (also sang the responses). If you are having those, they are the ones who tell you how many songs you need, for what parts, and will also give you song options. Either way, I would speak with the music director. You can always stop them on their way out of mass one Sunday and ask to set up a meeting!

I sang Ave Maria at my cousin's wedding. I like Cannon in D for the walk down the aisle.
