Catholic Wedding - Date Change - What should i do?

EmeraldBride, on June 23, 2020 at 2:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

So, I had been tentatively been planning our wedding for 6/12/21 because my planner and caterer (who are non-negotiable) are available that day. Well, I just found out that the pastor is not available on that date - he has a wedding to attend to in another town. So the church is available. What should I do?

1) Just book another date that is available.

2) Find another church.

3) Have an intimate wedding ceremony with very close family/friends before 6/12/21 and then have my reception on 6/12/21. Maybe even a short celebratory ceremony? I still have to run this by the pastor and see if this would be acceptable as Catholic churches are strict.

4) See if the deacon is able to do a wedding on that date.

What do you think will be the least stressful? I was really hoping to have a wedding while we had pretty green grass and flowers as we are having an outdoor reception in my backyard - early June is ideal for this, but June 5 is not available for anyone. I am most likely overthinking this.. but I welcome any thoughts and suggestions! Smiley heart

See if another pastor or deacon can do it if you like your date

I second asking if the deacon is available.
If not, are your planner and caterer available any other date in June? Does it have to be either the 5th or the 12th?
    Good luck!

You know, the date really doesn't matter. But the season does. I am going to have it in my backyard and I want to really make sure my flowers are going to be in their 'prime'. I think this is my biggest reason for this. I guess I sort of got it in my head that my wedding was going to be on June 12 and I fell in love with the date. Is there such a thing as that?

I just hope the planner and caterer are available on other dates in June.

I will definitely check into this!! I just didn't know if others with Catholic weddings had issues with this.

I ran into this situation. Our priest found out 2 months before our wedding a trip got moved and he’d be on a plane on our wedding day.
We just had a deacon marry us so we didn’t have to go through a hassle of moving dates or venues.
If you aren’t doing a mass I think your easiest option would be just have the deacon to it. For what it’s worth our priest was willing to marry us in a small intimate ceremony before we left for a destination wedding since we were toying with that idea. So if that option appeals to you and you really want that priest to do the ceremony I’d go that route.

I understand, we settled on 9/12/2020 pretty early and when things looked like they weren't going to work out for our date with our first choice venue I was hesitant to let it go. We figured it all out though and I'm sure you will too! Good luck!

Oh good to hear they are becoming more flexible these days! Hopefully mine aren't totally old school! I don't think we are doing mass. This was our compromise for the Catholic church wedding.
