Catholic marrying an Episcopalian?

MoreCoffeePlease, on September 7, 2014 at 11:17 PM Posted in Planning 1 4

Is there anyone here who is Catholic and married an Episcopalian where the ceremony was done by an Episcopalian priest? I know that you can get a dispensation for this from the Catholic Church, just curious if anyone has. Also, since Episcopalians allow outdoor weddings (i.e. not in a church), would a dispensation from the Catholic Church to get married by an Episcopalian priest mean that that ceremony can take place aside and the marriage is valid under Catholic canon?

I have a friend who got a dispensation to be married in the Lutheran church. You'll need to talk to your priest. Out of curiosity, why are you marrying in the Episcopalian church instead of the Catholic Church?

My parents. Dad is Episcopalian and my mother is Catholic. From what I've seen, the strictness on dispensation depends a lot of the strictness of the arch bishop in your area. However, I don't think where the ceremony takes place is very important for the dispensation portion.

Yep. It will depend on the bishop. Good luck!

My mom is Catholic and Dad Episcopalian. Agree with Della that the dispensation depends on your diocese - but I don't think the location has any bearing either way... I am Espiscopalian, and my FH is agnostic, with a Shinto Buddhism mom and Protestant dad. My Rector has no problem to marry us, as long as one of us is Christian, and both of us believe in God. There's no standard 'pre cana' in the Epsicopal church, but our priest is having us work through "The Marriage Journey" workbook with him before the wedding, to ensure we're prepared for the challenges married life.

BTW, as to marrying out of doors, keep in mind from a historical perspective, Christians were getting married before churches even existed, and Jesus often preached out of doors, including the famous Mt. of the Beatitudes (where I've been, and it's stunningly beautiful). So I can't imagine there's any reason that being married in a natural setting, or non-church setting, would violate any 'rules', whether Catholic or Episcopal... at least none of God or Jesus' rules!
