Catholic ceremony wedding vows

Ashley, on June 2, 2018 at 7:02 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 13
Hi everyone!

So my FH and I are getting married in a Catholic Church. Our priest is not quite familiar with the idea of writing our own vows. However, this is something we would like to do. So at what point in the ceremony is this traditionally done? Thanks for any advice/input!

I've actually never seen anyone say their own vows during a catholic ceremony. I think our church won't allow it actually. I think the only person who could answer that question for you is the church's wedding coordinator since the priest isn't familiar with it.

Yeah in my diocese we are not allowed to. I was under the impression it was a universal rule.
FH and I plan on writing each other the night before and putting little vows/promises in the note.

I do not think this is allowed in a Catholic ceremony. My first marriage was in the church, and it wasn't an option.
If you are allowed, then they would take place of the traditional vows in the ceremony.

When we introduced writing our own vows to our priest, he said we could in addition to the traditional vows. We just had to write them up before hand so he could look them over.

You might be able to say personal vows in addition to the church's standard vows. The church won't allow you to replace the standard vows. Another idea would be to say the vows to each other before the ceremony if you are doing a first look.

I’ve never been to a Catholic ceremony where this was included and/or allowed. Other posters’ ideas of saying them to each other as part of the first look or in a note are great ideas.

Thank you for the suggestion! That’s a great idea if we cannot do it during the ceremony

My future sister in law got married in the same church and was able to but with at different priest at the time. If we aren’t allowed, I like the other suggestions!

    I'm having a catholic wedding.
Maybe write them as a letter and have them delivered to one another while you are getting married before the wedding.
