Catholic Ceremony Music

Olivia, on February 12, 2020 at 7:22 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5
I need help figuring out what to do for music for my catholic ceremony. The singer at the church would be very very expensive for piano + singing, so I’m looking into other options. I think a mariachi trio would be cool, but I worry about how appropriate it would be for traditional songs and music that are traditionally played on piano or Oregon.

Does anyone have experience hiring outside musicians for catholic masses?

The Catholic wedding I went to last year hired a string quartet for their music and I thought it was lovely.

You can't ask your parish for suggestions? Thats what i did. They recommended these 2 ladies. I went to hear them sing and i just loved it. You can do that.

I would price out other options before you decide not to go with the church musician. In my experience, hiring another group would normally be the same price at least as church musicians, and possibly more expensive. There are areas of the country where mariachi masses are common, so mass parts definitely exist for mariachi ensembles.

I would ask your church what the policy/cost is on hiring outside musicians. I am also getting married in the Catholic Church, and the singer/organist through my church is way cheaper than hiring outside. I only have to pay the musician fee for both the signer and the organist; however, if I hire outside the church there is a fee for that AND whatever cost I would need to pay for that musician on their own fee. So, my one acquaintance is a cantor at my church, so I'm having her sing for one fee. But then I'm using my other friend who is an organist at another church, and I'm paying an outside musician fee, plus extra for her own pocket.

That being said, I absolutely think a mariachi trio would be totally fine if you'd want to hire them over a traditional organ. But it really depends on your church and music director.

Same here and I agree with the above post that it depends on the church. Our church is fairly strict about ensuring the musicians follow their guidelines (no outside musician fee, though), so they have a 2 page document any outside musician would have to adhere to. Much easier to hire one of their suggested people. We were lucky enough to book one lady who does both organ/piano and singing, I believe it was $250 or $300. To get two separate people would have been at least $100 more.
