Catholic brides - godparents in processional?

CMC, on July 5, 2016 at 6:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

FMIL mentioned something about godparents processing in along with the others at the start of the ceremony. I had never even considered this, and I haven't seen it in other Catholic weddings that I've been to. My godparents have never been involved in my religious life, so it's not something I would choose to include. Just curious to see if anyone else is doing this/has seen this done?

ETA: clarity

    I have never seen this even though I've done many Catholic couples (in non Catholic settings, of course....)

    I grew up Catholic and have been to a lot of Catholic weddings. I have never seen this before.

    I'm not familiar with godparents being involved in the processional. I plan on asking my godmother to do a reading though.

    I'm from a primarily Catholic town so every wedding I've been to (almost) has been Catholic. Never seen that

    Another vote for never seeing it done, and I've attended at least 30 Catholic weddings in my life.

    My mother's side is super hard core catholic and I've never seen Godparents as part of the processional. SOMETIMES there is a shout out to elder family members and immediate family when the bridal party is introduced at the dinner.

    I've never seen it done. Just before the start of my ceremony the mothers were seated and then the processional was the actual BP and then myself. No godparents.

    ETA sorry didn't scroll down to see your response before I opened my mouth :-)

    @lulu no worries, haha.

    It looks like nobody has ever heard of this - I have no idea where FMIL got this idea from. FH said that she has already mentioned something to his godmother about it. It is not happening so she will have to deal with that

    We did this! It was important to us to honor our godparents because they've played such big roles in our lives. We had them process in before our parents. Our priest had no issues with us having them in the procession.

    @ottershavingfun gotcha - makes total sense! Mine have not so I really don't see any reason to include them

    @soon2bmrsc definitely interesting! Maybe it is typical in different cultures, I've never seen it in American weddings (Catholic or not)
