I have been told by many people that we ( my husband and I) are making a mistake by waiting until next year to book our catering. We are getting married Oct 9th 2026. I just don't really know when would be a good time to book as we wont have accurate head count until maybe June or July of next year. We haven't really even started to look for catering option yet. Are we making a mistake here?

You should book a caterer ASAP especially if you have an October wedding, as it has been the most popular month to get married. Caterers only want a guesstimate and not an actual head count until 2 weeks before the wedding.

You definitely want to book your caterer sooner than later. Waiting will limit your options especially because October is a very popular wedding month. You also don't need to know the exact number of people. You can estimate and then once it's closer you can tell them your final head count.

I agree that you should book your vendors pretty soon for an October wedding since it's extremely popular. We had originally booked our venue for Labor Day weekend and that was starting to get difficult with vendors and family (and more expensive) since it's a holiday weekend so I just switched our date to October and they only had two dates left and both of them were Fridays. You can just give a rough estimate of a head count for now.
