Catering numbers

Lexi, on September 1, 2019 at 9:20 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
We’re doing a buffet from a Mexican restaurant down the street from our venue. I’ve heard you are supposed take the number of guests attending and subtract 20% and use that number for how much food to order. Is that right? What have you heard? We have 170 attending so 20% less would be 135 people to order dinner for. We’re doing fajitas and portions are pretty large. Thank you in advance!

If you have 170 attending, you order for 170. The 20% is the average number of declines couples get. It sounds like you already have your RSVPs in so that wouldn’t apply to you.

I’ve heard that with buffets you order a little less to account for kids who do not eat adult size portions and to not have so much left over. Who knows. I’ve read all different things so that’s why I was curious!

If you have your exact guest count, I'd order that number unless the restaurant recommends differently.

The restaurant should want to know how many kids are attending and will adjust how much they charge/make accordingly. We have 9 kids under three and 11 that are 3-10 years old so we told our caterers specifically because they had a different charge rate for specific age groups.

I agree with this. It's really better to have leftovers than not enough to go around!

Yeah, no. You should order food for all of your guests. 170 guests = 170 portions. How embarrassed would you be if 35 of your guests couldn’t eat because you provided your caterer with some made up guest count?

All I did was ask a simple question which didn’t call for a rude response. I didn’t think that sounded right either, so I wanted to make sure of what other people thought to make sure I ordered enough. Thank you for your help.

If you tell them how many guests are coming to the wedding they will suggest the actual amount that you should get (Qdobas basic catering menu says feeds about 25 people, actually feeds about 20)
