Catering for wedding

Felicity, on June 19, 2019 at 1:52 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19
Out of curiosity what is the typical amount that everyone is spending for catering costs with just food? We are providing our own alcohol so I just wanted to compare and make sure we are getting a good deal!

We’re paying $45 per person for passed apps, tri tip, salmon, fresh fruit, roasted veggies, wild rice, au gratin potatoes, Waldorf salad, tortellini pasta salad, pear and feta salad, and bread with oil/vinegar. We’re paying an extra $500 for a licensed person to pour the alcohol we’re providing.

You're going to get a lot of varying answers because you have some people do fast food chicken like above, some people do a multi-course plated meal and a lot of people somewhere in the middle.
What kind of food are you serving and what was the price you were quoted?

We paid $134 per person for stations and passed appetizers during cocktail hour, a 3 course plated meal, and dessert. That included gratuity. In total it was about $21k before tax for just the food.

We're bringing in food from a few different places for our buffet but the bulk of our catering for 75-80 people is around $1100. With the rest added in the food total (minus cake) will probably be around $1500 or so.

The bar is a full open bar & champagne toast & 2 bartenders & all glassware/mixers/etc. We are in Denver.

Ours is $18 per person and includes one appetizer, two entrees, salad, two sides, bread choice, tea and lemonade, and staff service for buffet. A little on the cheaper side to offset the fact that we need to rent tableware and linens. We are also planning to hire a bartender to serve our alcohol. Central North Carolina area.

Did mine at a banquet restaurant so its not by person but rather by table. The most basic menu is $400 a table of ten people and if you want to change anything then it'll be upgrades.

Mine will end up being about $15/person for hors d'oeuvres, bbq, ribs, 2-3 sides, and service of dessert (we are having ice cream and need the caterer to scoop it and distribute, but we are bringing in our ice cream from somewhere else). I'm inviting 115 people. So that comes out to $1,725.00 total.

We had our reception at our local fire hall. It included Hall rental, all of our linens, tables, chairs, napkins, utensils, hall coordinator and chef. All we had to do is supply our own alcohol, soda, water. juices and cake. and do a little decorating. we paid $3,500. This is why I love supporting local!

We don't have a final quote but for hors d'oeuvres, a buffet with 2 entree options, a vegetable and starch, pasta side, salad, rolls, a coffee station, linens, and table settings we are estimated to spend less than $6000 total for a guest count of around 150. It basically works out to about $30 per person. But like other people said, it will differ greatly depending on location, style, good choice, etc.

    This is our menu:

Cocktail hour will have chips, salsa, dip, fruits and vegetables at a table. Also there will be passed hor d'oeuvres of bacon wrapped tater tots, meatballs, beef on skewers, fried ravioli, and mac and cheese balls.

For the main course it will begin with Caesar salad and then a buffet with 3 stations (pasta with either alfredo or traditional sauce, bbq chicken, or flank steak). There will also be either carrots or potatoes as a side.

When dessert is served (we are making our own cake/cupcakes) catering will provied either coffee or tea.

Then there is also 5 hours of open bar with your normal selections of beer, wine, liquor, and mixers.

Catering is also providing the linens, plates, cups, silverware, etc as well as set up and tear down.

For all of this we are paying just over $10,000 with about 110 Guests. Location is Upstate NY.

We're doing a buffet of traditional Irish and European faire with open bar (to a preset limit) and the total cost in $1,800 including gratuity. I consider this to be a hell of a steal because they are not charging us to rent the banquet hall. We just had to meet their catering minimum, which was insanely low.

This is roughly the same we’re spending in the SLC area (Snowbird/Alta area). You honestly can’t find a reputable caterer to serve appetizers, drinks, and a full dinner for less. Part of that expense is also for the number of staff working our event, and of course the rentals FutureMrsD mentioned. It’s honesty about twice what my sister spent catering her Iowa wedding.
