Catering during Covid-19

Denise, on August 26, 2020 at 9:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
My wedding is December 5 2020. I am concerned about the food and table set up because of the virus. Originally I wanted to so buffet style and cloth linen on the table. Because of the virus I don't know if either is age and we should just go with disposables. Does anyone have any ideas and has had your wedding or it is upcoming? Should we so plated, buffet and cloth linen? Or disposable napkins?

Will people be serving the buffet food? I’d not you’ll have to deal with each of your guests touching the same things. I would definitely have disposable napkins as an option regardless.

I think a plated dinner is safer, but you can still do a buffet if it makes more sense to do that for any reason. You should definitely have it staffed so no one has to touch shared utensils and make sure it's organized so you don't have long lines. We had cloth linens and napkins with paper napkins for backup, because someone always drops a napkin or spills something. Cloth napkins are safe because you aren't asking anyone to share them. Normally with paper napkins, you have to take them from a pile, so multiple people end up touching the same ones. To avoid this, I gave each household a box with extra napkins in it, so they'd only have to share with someone they live with (it was also where I put their masks and hand sanitizer). Let me know if you have any other covid wedding questions. I spent a ton of time thinking about it and none of our guests got sick!

We switched from buffet to plated and served. It was too close to the new date to send menu options, so I did the same chicken/potato/veggie dish for everyone. The caterer has to rent plate covers but other than that, the cost was the same as our buffet.

Our venue encouraged us to change our buffet to a plated reception, which is fine, especially if it makes guests more comfortable and keeps the germ spreading down. They figured that it was better to plan this way then still plan on buffet but have to change if anything changes in our area. I would see if you could do a served buffet line, but then it's hard to social distance while waiting in line. Maybe see if your venue/caterer could do family style?

Talk to your caterer. A served buffet should be fine.

Thank you. Since I am leaning toward the served buffet after speaking to my caterer. What do you think about either having the plates set on the tables for guest to take and get served? Or have the plates with the servers who will give to the guests? I am going for a look on the table with chargers, linen napkins and hopefully the plates (disposable) on the table as well. Just trying to keep my vision while keeping guests feeling comfortable.

We were always doing a plated dinner. I couldn’t believe it but a buffet was more because the venue has to order more food per person because people take more food because their eyes are bigger than their stomachs.
