We're having a small wedding with 20 guests. Our wedding is in a rural setting. We want it to be elegant, but casual and fun at the same time. We're considering hiring a personal chef who is available and looks like she's a real interesting person. She's asking us to give her the top price we'd be willing to pay per person and we'll go from there.

My question: What is a good price range to determine a price we'd feel comfortable in asking? I don't want to insult her, yet I don't want to offer up a price that will break the bank. I don't even know what a mid-range price would be for this kind of setting. Any assistance would be great.

Thanks!

Well, she's a personal chef, not a huge catering business and she is the ONLY one in that area, other than one restaurant that caters. As I stated, it's a very rural area. So, she's very used to doing small dinner parties or larger office parties.

We budgeted $2500 for 100 people, not including alcohol, for a cocktail / hors d'ouevres reception (no dinner). I would think you'd be able to have something nice for $500-$1000 or less for only 20 people. I would look at your budget and allocate 30% (plus or minus) for your food. Then, give the caterer a slightly smaller number. I really don't think it's odd that they ask for a price range, but a top price isn't what I would give. Low-ball it for sure. Your reception overall could be up to 50% of your budget.

She actually came back with a great price and it's right with my budget. Just not sure if we'll do a buffet, sit down or stations yet.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm excited.
