Catering and Tipping

Cheyenne , on May 15, 2019 at 12:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Hi! So, our venue required us to use their catering and is not very accommodating to different palettes and doesn't allow us to bring anything of our own. The catering is provided by the owners, so they do not hire any additional help. Our catering is extremely expensive for our budget, even though we went with the cheapest option which is hamburgers and hotdogs.

Since it's required to use them and they aren't using additional servers, do we give them a tip? They included a cleanup fee and sales tax, which make up an 16.5% of our bill. My fiancé said not to tip, but I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

Thank you!

Will they be serving as well? Or is that separate? I feel servers always deserve tips!

It's a buffet style, so no. I always tip, especially waitstaff, but I believe it's just the owners that are making the food and setting it up.

This is tricky. I will say that 16.5% tax and fee seems incredibly high. I am not sure where you are from, so maybe your sales tax is higher there, but that is more than double our sales tax where I live. So maybe they are factoring in gratuity already? Maybe read the fine print in your contract. See exactly what you are paying for and use your best judgement. If you do decide to tip, maybe you could do 15% instead of the traditional 20% or something like that to balance out the cost? I am curious to see what other ladies say on here as well.

The 16.5% is the combined clean up and sales tax. Tax is 6.5% and the 10% is clean up. 15-20% off our bill is almost a $400 tip and that seems ludicrously high to me, since they don't hire extra help. If they had actual servers, I'd probably just tip them directly. I'm not sure where my contract is, though, because we had a house fire so everything has been a mess, lol. Thank you for your thoughts, though!

A 10% clean up fee?!?! That is insane. And you are right $400 is high when they are already charging you an insane clean up fee. I am starting to lean towards not tipping....

Also, I am so sorry to hear about your house fire!!! I hope you did not loose too much stuff! Good luck with everything!

Typically I'm a big tipper but if they're over charging for hamburgers and hotdogs I wouldn't tip. This is wedding, they're supposed to accommodate you.

I talked to a friend of mine that got married there! She said that they just had the owners, so there was no additional help. She said they didn't tip, due to the percentages they're already taking out. Thanks everyone!

I would tip as I was in customer service for 16 years. If gratuity isn't added I always tip.

I would not tip, some states do not allow tip to be included in bill, not sure about yours but it seems like they have found a way around this and are charging the clean up fee to be sure they get a tip. The clean up fee is absolutely ridiculous!!!

I agree with you here and I too would not tip in such a situation. That 16.5% of tax is too high to be charged for services. Smiley ups
