Caterers laid off our staff!

Hi everyone!

I've asked my planner about this, but I wanted to go ahead and get some more opinions. Our wedding is at the end of March next year. We've had our caterer booked for a while. We knew what food we wanted immediately so it was an easy decision right away!

I got an email from our caterer last week saying they've laid off all of their event staff due to COVID-19. They can still provide the food, but they are not hiring anyone from their company to deliver the food, set it up, man the buffet stations, or clean up.

They recommended a staffing company to me who was double our original catering budget. At this point, we can't really find other event staff in the area that can do it for cheaper than what we were quoted. My planner suggested a few but they were still pricey (almost $3k)

I would hate to scrap our caterer all together since it's the food we really wanted, we have 5 months left before the wedding, and we've put a substantial deposit down. However, I believe they did change the terms of our agreement. Any recommendations? It's a buffet-style so it's pretty easy. We also have some snacks during cocktail hour. Our venue does require a full-service catering company, and I don't really want friends/family distracted by serving us and our guests all night.

I personally would look for a different catering company if you don't think you can find someone to staff it. That would put alot on your family and friends and it seems they wouldn't qualify if your venue requires a full service company.

Find another caterer but make sure you can taste the food before booking and that they will make the food you want. Try Thumbtack.com

I would look for another company. My suggestion was going to be having family and friends help but since that’s not an option and your venue requires full service staffing I would find another company. Are you able to receive a refund since things have changed? Or ask your planner for suggestions as far as delivery and set up if you really don’t want to go with another company

Find another caterer. This one has broken their contract with you. They won’t even deliver and set up the food? That’s not ok. There are specific temps foods have to be kept at for safety. Not just anyone can do that. You shouldn’t lose your deposit with them because they are not fulfilling their end of the contract. Good luck finding a new caterer!

I would definitely look for a different caterer, and you should be able to get your deposit back since they're not upholding their end of the contract. You are definitely going to need serving staff if you're having a buffet during Covid, so I would find another caterer who provides the necessary staff!

Personally I would look into another catering company. If your venue requires a full service catering company, you might have to find a new one anyway due to their rules on catering.
