Caterer rant

Alejandra, on October 23, 2019 at 11:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
So not these aren’t my caterers, but our venue wants us to use their preferred caterers or pay an extra $1000. It’s a buffet of one entre and a few sides with a Mac n cheese bar for cocktail hour. Every proposal we’re getting is upwards of $3,500 which is 1K over our ideal budget. A caterer just quoted me $6500 for 75 people for stuff we didn’t want added in and 4 servers, 1 event coordinator, 1 chef, and 1 assistant chef for 10-12 hours which is a total of $2,500 itself. Even our actual food isn’t that expensive. I know it’s gonna be a lot but that just seems excessive. Also $600 for disposable silverware.

Oh my! Just reading those numbers I'm getting stressed out! Obviously I don't know where you're from, or where you're getting married, but that amount of money for 75 people is insane! Granted, my fiance and I are from Northeast Pennsylvania, and that's where we're getting married and things aren't really that expensive here (in comparison to a larger city). We are having BBQ and for 200 people we are less than $5,000. That's for the food (2 meats, 3 sides, rolls, cornbread and butter, and multiple sauces), the appetizers, bartenders, and servers (who will walk around with the appetizers during cocktail hour, serve people as they walk through the buffet line, clean up, and take care of trash.) Service charge, tax, and gratuity are included in this as well. I have to agree with you that that price seems excessive. Best of luck in finding someone in your budget! I hope it all works out for you!

Can you provide your own disposable plates & silverware? I would just tell them your budget exactly & ask what they can do with that.

We wanted basically that exact same menu with a different caterer! They were still too expensive for us. We’re having our wedding outside Chicago. We knew it would be expensive but that’s fairly outrageous for how small our wedding is. Even our coordinator said it was ridiculous and a rip off. :/ but I’m glad you found something that works for you!

We’re probably gonna end up providing our own silverware. We did give them a budget and they sent us this, including three passed appetizers for cocktail hour which we didn’t ask for.

Is it an itemized quote so you can easily take things off & see what you'll save?

We can, but the totally is essentially just for appetizers we didn’t ask for. So if we took that off we would only save about $200. We’re most likely not going with them.

Is your quote for buffet or plated? This may bring it down for you...uggg best of luck, it is complex. Ask for an itemized quote if you can, then you can see where you can cut. I swear, would people charge us these prices if we told them it was a birthday party, hahaha
