Caterer deposit back due to Covid

Gabriel, on April 14, 2020 at 9:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
I paid the deposit to the caterer for the wedding reception for my son and his fiancé. The wedding was suppose to be May 9, 2020. Due to the Convid the wedding had to be cancelled. I have received a refund from the venue and everyone else that was paid. The caterer is refusing to refund because the deposit is non refundable. I understand however since not being able to have the event was out of our control I think the caterer should refund. They are saying we can use their service in the future. Who knows when all the is virus stuff will clear up or even if they will still be in business. Any suggestions as to what we should do to convince them to refund

You need to look at your contract.

Many deposits are non-refundable, unfortunately. Cancellations usually mean you don't get the deposit back, unless the business can fill the date. If you postpone, they will keep the deposit and use it for the new date.

They’re not required to give you a refund, they’re offering to postpone. It’s also not their fault that your event had to be cancelled. There’s not much you can do about it.

Thanks for the replies I was just hoping that under the circumstances they would be more willing to refund. I doubt if they will get a job for that day since everything is shutdown. Out of all the vendors they are the only one that want refund.

I totally get the disappointment but even large multi billion dollar companies aren’t offering refunds on things right now. Airlines are offering to change your flights to next year and Ticketmaster isn’t offering refunds on postponed concerts or sporting events. I don’t think companies can afford to refund everyone unfortunately. Yes it would be nice it’s just not the way businesses are run.

It’s a win win for them what if their business close down before a new date is scheduled

Actually the cruise that I also had paid will be giving a full refund back even the venue gave a full refund. Every company is different. I’ve been in business for 40 years and always think of providing great customer service. When we entered into the contract with them we were taking a chance on them. Many couples have found out at the last minute that Thur vendors have went out of business.

Any business could close down anytime after a deposit is paid, that doesn’t change because of the pandemic.

That’s true it’s all so upsetting that because of the pandemic plans had to change. The bright side that everyone is healthy and in the scheme of things the deposit is nothing to compared to the people who have lost their lives and the families are left to grieve

I would have your son and his fiance look at their available dates and try to reschedule. That way you do not lose your money. Otherwise, it sounds like there really is not much else you can do, unfortunately.

That’s all good but the venue changed to the concept that they will not in the future allow outside vendors

Their business closing down is not in any universe a win win.
