Catered or buffet style for micro wedding

Rosilus, on May 16, 2020 at 11:23 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

Hello all I am looking for advice on this as well as logic. I postponed my July wedding to may next year. I only have 10 guests beside my self and 4 people (vendors) attending which will be a total of 14. I want my wedding to be nice but sensible. I already have a fire hall booked for the event (4 hours). I wanted to know for such a small crowd would it be better to have dinner at a buffet restaurant that's really nice or have food catered? Originally I was gonna have food catered had I not postponed but I spoke with the fiance and it turns out it will be much cheaper to do it at a restaurant and have a cake and drinks back at the hall afterwards for the reception party. Let me know what you guys think?

Unless you have your heart set on food the restaurant can't provide, it might be best to take the restaurant and save some money.

I've never heard of a nice restaurant with a buffet other than a country club. If I oy had 14 people I'd probably do a plated dinner

Since you are only having 14 people, I would have a catered dinner.

Have you ever been to a vegas buffet? Some are really nice and expensive. I live in Southern California and there’s a restaurant my family goes to that does a fairly fancy/expensive (around $80 pp + drinks and tax) buffet on weekend. They serve lobster tails, oysters, prime rib... don’t sleep on a good buffet. lol.

I'm also having a 14 person wedding and we are doing an afternoon tea style reception. If we were doing dinner I would pick a plated full service space. Of course, if you have a private room, it could be quite special to have a small private buffet set up with an elevated service plus a small drinks cart. Starting to plan a whole other wedding in my head right now. 😂

I would do a private room in a restaurant. I’d prefer plated meals for your guests (perhaps the restaurant can give your guests a 2-3 main course option since you have a small group).

If you really want to do a buffet, I’d see if the restaurant can do one in your private dining room. With Covid, not sure public buffets will even be allowed anymore or would your guests feel safe eating from one.

I think it comes down to an element of formality. How much does the inherent formal element of a plated dinner mean to you? You can decide if that formality is worth the increased cost for a catered dinner.

Oh my comment was more in response to the poster who said she’s never heard of a nice restaurant with a buffet. I feel like buffets get a bad rep and a lot of people think it’s not as nice or it’s less formal.

I personally had plated meals at my wedding and it was the less expensive option at $140/pp. I think a buffet can still be nice, but as other mentioned— might not be as feasible with places being more strict because of covid-19.
Definitely do vegas one day— I go there just to eat! Haha

From my experience, a 3 course meal is more than enough food for 1 person. Plus there's less waste. You could also do a plated dinner but have a big roast carved to order, then people could have seconds.

Or you could compromise and have a family style dinner. Very convivial and people can eat as much or as little as they like. My cousin did this for her wedding. Catered or buffet style for micro wedding 1

If you love the restaurant, go with that.
