Cat Toss and Adoption!

Kelly, on April 13, 2023 at 6:37 PM Posted in Community Conversations 2 8

We're tossing a stuffed cat in lieu of a bouquet toss. All guests will be welcome to participate and whoever catches will be the next to adopt a cat. I'm very excited today because the I got the certificate from the Humane Society! They had never done something like this before, so it took some time for them to work out how to do it. They ended up giving me a certificate to give the cat winner so they can choose which pet to adopt, then I'll pay the fee. I'm so excited it's going to work out!

That’s fun and unique! I would just make it clear to the guests what’s going on (like what if someone doesn’t understand and then catches the stuffed animal but doesn’t want to adopt the cat)? Especially if people are drinking. Sometimes pet adoption requires planning, household discussions, etc., and I don’t think anyone goes into a wedding expecting to come out with a new pet. So is the humane society on board if no one ends up deciding to take a cat? It still sounds fun, just like there are ways it could backfire. (But honestly I wish someone would do this at a wedding I’m attending because I’ve been begging my fiancé for a cat for years, and he always says no, but maybe this way he’d feel obligated lol).

My only concern would be someone feeling obligated to adopt a cat even if they don't really want one. I would probably announce this plan in advance to give guests to actually think about whether they want to participate rather than a possibly drunk choice if you are having alcohol that they then later regret as pets are a commitment and should be treated as such.

Thanks! So no one is obligated to adopt. Whoever catches the stuffed cat keeps it, but the adoption can be by whoever wants to adopt a pet. If no one does, we'll just make a donation to the Humane Society. Also we'll announce it ahead of time!

Haha my fiance was on the fence about getting cats (I learned this afterwards). He loves them so much now he can't imagine life without them!

Interesting. I got the idea because I was looking for an alternative to a bouquet toss and we have our own rescue cats. My wedding is in October.
