Cashing checks before name change

FutureMrsSchimp, on September 28, 2017 at 4:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Our wedding is Saturday, but one couple who can't attend sent us a check written to my FH and myself using my married name. Has anyone cashed a check like this before your legal name has been changed? Just not sure how to endorse it.

    Have your FH do it?

I never even changed my name- and we still cashed the checks to his bank. Did it the day after. No problem- drove up- dropped them off- went on our honeymoon.

Take it into the bank with your marriage certificate.

ETA: When I was a teller I never required proof you were married. If you brought in a stack of cheques and cash then it was reasonable to say you had some kind of function

If the check is made out to both of you, you'll both have to endorse it. Just sign it with your married name and then have your H deposit it in his account.

I didn't take H's last name, but we did have several checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. Hislast. I just signed them Bookcase Hislast and we had no problems depositing them.

DH just deposited all of our's. We didn't have to endorse them individually.

We had someone literally just write in our first names and our bank let us deposit it so you should be fine as long as you have your DH/FH with you

We just did this. For DH's bank (this probably varies by bank) they required that I be added to his account (we haven't opened a joint account, yet). He could cash any checks written to just him, or to Mr OR Mrs, but we both had to sign for checks written to Mr AND Mrs. They had me sign the checks twice, once as First His Last, and once as First Maiden (which is still technically my legal name).

ETA: @MrsBdeG, that happened to us, too!

I was a teller for 5 years, if you are both on the account, endorse it the same way the check is written out! If you are not on the account, we are technically NOT supposed to take it! An ATM machine will take it, no matter who it's made out to or how it's endorsed but your account is subjected to be flagged.

Just bring your license and it should be fine. FH changed his last name on FB years ago to his mothers maiden name while he was job hunting because he wanted it private from potential employers and just doesnt use Facebook so he never changed it back. We've recieved a few checks to his FB name and he can deposit them in person no problem. He just explains the Facebook thing and shows them his profile and his drivers license and its good enough for them.

This happened to us. We both went to the bank (with no other paperwork) and just told them we got married two days prior. For the ones made out with my new last name, the teller simply stamped the back "for deposit only". Just go to the bank and explain the situation to the teller.

We had several checks made out this way, I never touched them and H was able to cash/deposit them all.

I was a teller and service rep for many years; this can differ based on the bank's policy.

I agree that if you're simply depositing it, sign it twice - once with your maiden name and once with your married name. If you're cashing the check - as in, exchanging the piece of paper for cash - then your bank may want proof of who you were and who you are now (if that makes sense). Usually bringing in your marriage license works out best.

As long as the account is in both you and your husband's name you can deposit the check. No signing is required

We had a joint account and my bank asked him to sign, me to sign with my maiden name, and then me to sign again with my married name. I didn't need any paperwork, I just had to sign those particular checks twice. For anything that said "H Lastname or W Marriedlastname" we could get away with just his signature because of the OR rather than and.
