Cash Tips

Kelly, on May 13, 2022 at 9:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Do we need to tip in cash? I'd much prefer to write a check or Venmo. I don't want to deal with a ton of cash on my wedding day (or any day). I'm in the US, so most people don't carry cash anyway.

I'm not asking about whether or not to tip, I'm asking how to tip.

I think writing a check would be totally fine! If you've previously paid your vendors through venmo or PayPal or something similar, I think it would be fine to send them a tip that way as well.

We're having envelopes of cash with the company name of the vendor & that specific person's name (so like DJ - COMPANY NAME - FIRST NAME LAST INITIAL) and we're giving them to either my dad or my FH's mom to hand out to the vendors at the end of the night.

But I definitely think it's okay to write checks. and like PP said, some vendors may have some cash app that you could also use.

Thanks! I just feel so much better with checks than with cash.

Haha those envelopes of cash are exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I just know I'd lose one.

I get that! That's why we'd give them to the parent before hand, my dad kept track of them for my sister and was very on top of it.

Have all the checks ready so you can just hand them out. You do not want to be fumbling with Venmo on the day of your wedding. My 9 guest wedding felt hectic, and ordering on DoorDash was more stressful than it should have been

I think writing out a check ahead of time would be easiest. If you have a coordinator/ planner you can give them the envelopes to distribute, or you could even designate family members to hand them out.

Thanks. I'd definitely write them beforehand, I just wanted to make sure it was appropriate to give checks.

Giving them to a planner is a good idea! I have to find one first, though. Several are already booked.

Any tip paid through Venmo is liable to be counted as income and taxed accordingly, so I prefer to avoid tipping that way. If you don’t want to do cash, personal checks are fine too. We did most of ours as checks and I also liked that it meant we could verify that they all got to their intended recipients! We gave all the catering staff tip checks to the catering coordinator to distribute, and I liked that it held them accountable!

We did all of our tips via checks. We wrote them out beforehand and our coordinator handed out the envelopes to the various vendors

I was thinking that too. It's nice knowing that the correct person is getting tipped.

A few of our vendors allowed us to add gratuity online with a final payment on their website (videographer and DJ/lighting, I think both had this option). So you may find you have that option as you get to that final payment stage, at least for some vendors. For others we did have a tip envelope with cash which our DOC distributed, but I don't know that anyone would have had an issue with a check instead!

My FH and I have talked about this and we have both decided we are going to write checks. Less hassle, less mess and less to worry about later.
