Hello, our wedding is quickly approaching. 4 weeks left!! And we have run into a problem. Our venue offers bar services but we cannot decide between an open bar or a cash bar. We know for sure that we will not be offering any type of cocktail or hard alcohol. Beer and wine only. My FH has never heard of a cash bar before and I have never been to an open bar before so we are trying to get other people opinions to help us out.

My family are HUGE drinkers, to the point of it being embarrassing. They get drunk and sloppy real quick so that was a major reason as to why we didn't want hard alcohol.

I think, we should have a cash bar. This will help slow down their drinking and keep them sober longer. (I'm hoping)

My FH thinks a cash bar is tacky and we should have an open bar. He's definitely more of a, "whatever happens, happens" kind of guy.

Please let us know what you think, we have 2 weeks to figure it out!

Thank you!

Here, you are going to get open bar for sure. Popular opinion is cash bar is tacky, and I agree. Have the bar tenders cut people off if you think there will be a problem, but I think eliminating hard liquor is a good idea.

@ slimshady, I hardly think one internet forum or the opinions on it constitute a "universal experience".

@Akelah your idea is even worse than a cash bar.

Open bar. Just remind the bartenders to cut off drunk relatives

I have been to wedding who had both and I had fun at both. I will say at one open bar one the crowd got really rowdy towards the end because everyone was fucked up

In your situation, I'd go for like a dollar bar if possible. Or drink tickets. If neither is possible, leave it open. But tell the bartender to be very careful and not afraid to cut people off.

Your FH is correct. Cash bar is tacky.

Lovely, no to a dollar bar or drink tickets. It's a wedding, not a carnival.

When you're on mobile, there isn't an option to search threads. And 99% of the time that I look at WW forums, I'm on Mobile. People want to start a dialogue. They get engaged. They don't know where to start planning, they go to Wedding Wire, as it's usually the first thing to pop up on Google. They have a question, they ask.

Repeated questions happen on every forum. Wedding planning, gaming. Every one. People join later than others and aren't as familiar with the status quo, the habits and tendencies of the forum community.

I really don't understand why people get so upset with people making new posts. If it really bothers you, you don't have to answer, as there is enough people that have answered. And if it is a troll, then you're just feeding it.

A simple, "hey, you can search older forum posts on the Desktop WW. It will help you be familiar with the general consensus on these issues in this community" would not be misplaced. ETA: words

You can offer beer and wine- at no expense to your guests and be fine. A cash bar is almost as bad as a dry wedding. Open bar is very expensive and many times excessive. It is not rude to not provide open bar. You can host a party without top shelf liquor drinks and cocktails believe it or not. Happy medium- host beer wine and signature drinks and all is right with the world.
