Cash bar vs no bar!?

kelsey, on May 24, 2019 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
So let me start off by saying we are having an open bar at our wedding from cocktail hour (starting at 6:30) until 10:30 at our reception. We extended our reception by an hour so it will end at 11:30. By doing that we could also not afford to keep an open bar going for another hour as well.

Our options are either shut down the bar entirely or turn it into a cash bar.
I am mortified of a cash bar but I don’t want guests not to have an option to drink. We have a big drinking crowd also.
I know someone will say etiquette on this is a regional thing or a know your own crowd thing. Our guests are literally from all over the US, but mostly New England, New York and the south east.
Help! Cash bar vs no bar?!

I think no alcohol for the last hour is a good thing. Give everyone a chance to sober up a bit before they head out. Maybe even have coffee or something as a nightcap.

I agree with no bar after 1030. Gives people time to sober up a little.

Totally agree. You’re fine. A coffee/tea service the last hour would be much appreciated.

I see no problem with turning it into a cash bar after an open bar for so long. People will be willing to pay for one last drink that last hour of they really do want one. It will show people down and be safe, it will not reflect badly on you.

Your other option is to stop bar service for half an hour during dinner, which means you could extend your open bar until 11:00pm without an increase of cost. Most people will stay in their seats for 30 minutes when they’re eating dinner so won’t even notice that the bar isn’t serving.

I think having an open bar all night and then turning it into a cash bar is a strange choice.
I say that as someone who doesnt mind cash bars.
I think giving people an hour to sober up wouldn't be a bad idea.

I agree with stopping the liquor at that point and just having soda and stuff like that for the last hour so people can sober up. Have dj announce a last call kinda deal a few minutes before.

Just announce last call at 10:20 or so. People will probably grab on more and then start to pack up and trickle out.

I don't know where you're getting married, but all the venues I looked at in the Boston area closed the bar a half hour before the end of the reception, no matter what time.
