Caricature vs. Photo Booth......or both? (Pics in comments)

mmbrake28, on August 6, 2017 at 5:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

FH is out of town on a work trip, so my mom surprised me on Friday by texting me that she got tickets for me, her, and my younger sister to go to a bridal expo! I had never been to one and it was a lot of fun. Some gimmicky stuff and a few pressuring vendors but overall we had a fun day.

Now, one of the booths was a caricature artist. I hadn't even thought of this idea and it was honestly a lot of fun. It took about 3 minutes in total for him to draw my picture and I think he did a pretty good job. He's a retired guy that now owns his own little art studio and does art lessons and does caricature art as a little side weekend business. His prices were also super cheap...only $199 for 3 hours at the reception!

We also tested out a few photo-booth vendors which were pretty fun. But my mom loved the caricature because it was unique, and she said she went to a wedding like 10 years ago that had one and she still has the picture in a memory box. But I'm torn on what to do.

Caricature picture....he said he can draw individual pictures, couples, or small groups/families. His price was $199/3 hours and he can usually draw 50 pictures in that time frame.

    Photo-booth picture #1:

    1) This is from a vendor that prints each individual picture. They didn't have a backdrop at the expo, but she said that they have over 20 to choose from or we could create our own. However, it was $800 for the night, but that included unlimited pictures.

That's a tough one! FSIL had caricatures at the rehearsal dinner and a photo booth at the wedding. We loved the caricature and it's still hanging on our wall!

ETA - Ellsy brings up a great point. The drawings will be very time-consuming!

I wanted to do this too, My STD'S were actually caricature. But after talking to FH he had a great point 50 people in 3 hours is fine if youre having a small guest list. A photo booth can get a lot more people done in that time. And with caricatures youll have people wasting time waiting in line

    Photo Booth picture option #2:

    2) This vendor prints the pictures in strips. They print one for the guest and one for me to put in a scrapbook where the guests can sign it or write a short message. It was fun, but I didn't like that the photo-booth was a big enclosure that took up a lot of space. I like these pictures more, but I like the idea of a backdrop better. The price for this was $650 for the night

    Guest list is about 150-ish.

But he said 50 pictures...so if people got them done in small groups or as couples then maybe more people would be able to get them done?

Honestly $199 is not a bad price for the service, and I'd be willing to pay for both. Do you think it'd be too much to have a Photo Booth AND a caricature artist? The caricature artist would only be there from around 5-8, whereas the photo-booth would be open until around 11:30-midnight.

I think the photo booth would service more people. And with the photo booth, you can go up and get pictures taken with different people, whereas the caricature you would likely only get one crack at it. I've saved all the photo booth pictures I've taken at weddings.

@Kristin - good point!! But I figure a lot of the groups would be couples and small families...where they would probably only want 1 anyway. However, if a small group of friends got one then, yeah, only one person would get to keep it. I didn't think of that, though!

I've always wanted a caricature. I noticed the first photo booth doesn't have props. Is that what you're wanting from the second? You could talk to the vendor and see if you could use them, but purchase your own props so you get the best of both! The back drop and the props! Etsy has some cute ones! We will be using Polaroids as our guest book and I've considered buying props off Etsy!

I think the caricature artist is a very nice idea and would be great if you could afford both. I can tell you my company did a wedding this past Saturday with our photo booth and we took AT LEAST 348 photos (not even including retakes when people had their eyes closed or didn't like their chin) and every person left with a photo in their hand, more if they wanted them and there were multiple backgrounds. If you can afford both I don't think you would be disappointed providing both the fun and the uniqueness.

We're having a carnival themed wedding and we're having both! Our caricature drawer was also very inexpensive and I'm in love with the idea! If I had to pick one though I would pick the caricature drawer!
