Card Box Theft

C&S, on June 2, 2015 at 3:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 44

Since my wedding is coming up very soon, a new thing makes me anxious every day. Today it is the possibility of getting my card box stolen Smiley sad I've heard horror stories of people taking card boxes full of thousands of dollars.

We don't have a DOC, so we were thinking of asking two aunts to stick by the card box during the cocktail hour (while we're away getting pictures taken), then having someone from the venue put it in the locked bridal suite for the remainder of the reception. But I'm worried that our aunts will get distracted and leave the box alone.

What is your day-of plan for your card box to avoid theft?

You really think someone at your wedding will take your whole card box? That is horrible! I guess I never even thought that someone would do that....

Wow this is a thing? I would have never thought anyone that was invited to a wedding would steal from the couple. That's just crazy to me.

How often does this actually happen? I mean, I get it, but it seems like an irrational fear.

You really think someone is going to steal your card box? I think you're being super paranoid.

I've heard of that happening but it was employees of the venue that stole it, not their guests. I would put it right by my sweetheart table & then make sure my family was the closest table to the card box. This way there is always an eye on it. Also I've heard of ladies putting bricks in it so that it's really heavy or putting bells in it so that it makes a lot of noise when someone lifts it up.

Not someone invited to the wedding - a wedding crasher or stranger. Anyone could just walk in off the street because it's at a conference centre. I was reading this article and it terrified me! http://metronews.ca/news/toronto/1176372/mississauga-couple-robbed-on-wedding-night-at-woodbridge-reception-hall/ That's right near where I live.

I've heard about this too. I think it's usually a problem in public spaces like hotels. I just hope we don't have this issue, but our DOC said she's used to keeping a close eye on card boxes.

I'm not too worried about the card box being stolen .... we are having a small wedding & we are the only event at the venue so everyone there either knows us or if working the event.

My DJ recommended having the best man & maid of honor remove the card box shortly after the reception/dinner has started & count the # of enveloped that are in it. Then use one of those fed ex envelopes that you can seal & write the # of cards going into it! That way if you get to your card box & the sealed envelope is tampered with or the # of cards inside doesn't match you know something went wrong....

It's no necessarily someone at your wedding who could possibly take it. My venue is a restaurant and I only have about half of it reserved, so it's still open to the public.

Anyway, I know it doesn't help you OP, be we have a DOC, so she'll be on that. Also, I have a nautical theme so my "box" is a chest that is kind of big and had a little weight to it, so it would be more difficult to easily get away with it.

I've heard of envelopes getting stolen from a card box that is not somehow locked, but never a card box.

Our parent table is right next to the card box and we will have them empty the box every so often.

You can get locking card boxes.

We didn't worry about it. Our DOC set it up and moved it, then we grabbed it at the end of the night. We were at a country club with lots of golfers around but otherwise not a ton of the "public." Ours didnt lock and we didnt have any issues.

Our caterer suggested to put the card box next to the cake since its up in the front. When she said this I was like "who's going to steal it?" But I guess someone could ya know?

Our venue placed the gift table over in the room, so it wasn't near a doorway. It would've been obvious if someone was walking away with the card box. I think this is really the best you can do.

This just happened to a couple:

    http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/newlyweds-robbed-of-thousands-of-dollars-in-gifts-on-wedding-day-1.2041087

I was appalled by the news but not surprised, after all these days people steal donation boxes.

I went to a wedding where the FOB (father of the bride) hired a BRINKS security SUV to come pick up the card box with 2 armed guards. Way too serious if you ask me. But you shouldn't worry too much, your venue should have a safe to lock your money box in.

Ours is very complicated to open, but I do fear someone stealing the entire box. There's another wedding happening in a different hall of the same venue and our guest box table will be right outside the door of our hall Smiley sad plus, if anyone read my post from this morning, now we'll have some weird characters attend as well and I don't knot them at all.

This does happen at venues that are not private (ie. hotels, conference centers, or other places that would have people not with your group passing by). I would think your aunts would be careful, knowing that the box is valuable. Maybe it would be a good idea just to mention to them that you are nervous about something happening to the card box because strangers may walk by and there was a theft in your area. That will probably make them more alert to keeping an eye on it. I think it would be weird to keep it next to your head table, and I could see people just set their cards down on the gift table if there was no designated card box right when they walk in.

It sounds to me like the person in the article wasn't even dressed like the staff. The bride and groom just let a random guy off the street help clean up their wedding. It also sounds like the card box was left behind after everyone left! What maroons.
