Can't get a marriage license for the state of our wedding!

We live in CA but we plan to get married in NY (it's too late to change the location). We're actually getting married a relative's house, and our friend from CA is officiating the wedding. We have all the necessary forms of ID for a California license, but not for a NY license.

One idea would be to sign the CA license with our friend, in CA, but not see that as our "wedding" until our actual wedding, but DF doesn't like the idea. He suggested that our CA friend just sign our CA license in NY after officiating, and nobody would know he did it in New York.

Thoughts? Please don't suggest we just get a NY license, because as I mentioned that's not possible for us. Thanks in advance!

NY is ridiculous about many things...I lived there longer than I wanted to! If there is a paperwork hassle and chance for an extra fee, believe me: they'll take it. >.<

As far as the wait period, I worked at a hotel that did destination weddings (in NY) and I know couples would come in a few days ahead to apply and then go pick it up. So I would not assume it would go smoothly, but rather call them and get an appointment, etc!

    Hope it all works out!

You get the licence for the state you get married in at least here in Missouri and Illinois, we were going to get married in IL because he is from there, but we are getting married in MO and we get a missouri license. In Nevada, when you go there, you get a Nevada license even if its a drive through wedding.

Most places only need one form of ID and one form of age related document. You really need to get copies of your birth certificates because even some counties in CA to get married you need them. What other forms is the county in NY saying you need. In NY you don't have to have every form that is listed just at lest one form of ID and one age related document.

@mrscountrylace In our specific NY county we actually have to provide more than just birth certificate and passport- we also need SS card and driver's license! It's nuts! I'm just a little afraid that there will be some hassle that prevents us from getting it all. In CA, you just need one form of ID, lol.

I'm starting to wonder if we should just sign the papers in CA with our friend and not treat it like a wedding. That would be the easier option, but DF says it makes the wedding "fake".

    @Ashley

Okay, that's great to know! I guess I'm a little concerned though because the specific *county* I want to get married in does say it requires:

    1. Original Birth Certificate in the English language

    2. Photo I.D. such as a Driver’s License showing current address

    3. Social Security Cards

    4. Current Passport showing signature

and it doesn't say "one of" which is disconcerting. i can defintely get a copy of my birth certificate but I'm a little worried about the other stuff- I dont have a photo ID other than a passport and I don't know if DF has his SS card (I just asked him)

Well I'm glad that you're able to get what you need and that it will all work out...

I just have to add that I live in SoCal and they barely looked at our drivers licenses - 15 minutes later we raised our right hand, swore we told the truth and they printed the marriage license then and there. It is hysterically easy to get married in CA.

I live in NY. We got our license while we were still there. You just have to wait 24 hrs. It is good for 60 days. I also got a copy of my birth certificate on the spot. Cost $10. Actually picked up 2 copies.

I went into the place where you get birth certificates and it took literally not more than 5 min. why does it seem to take some people longer??

What county are you getting married in? We live in NY and are getting married here and all FH and I needed was our birth certificates and photo id. Either a drivers license or a passport. We applied for the license and left the clerks office with it. Only took 30 mins. And it is valid 24hrs after you apply for it. http://www.health.ny.gov/publications/4210/

I don't know where you are getting your information. If you go to this website

    http://www.health.ny.gov/publications/4210/

it says you can get your marriage license at ANY city or town clerk in the state of New York and the requirements are as follows:

A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting to the issuing clerk one of the following age related documents:

    Birth Certificate

    Baptismal record

    Naturalization record

    Census record

And one of the following identity related documents:

    Driver's license

    Passport

    Employment picture ID

    Immigration record

That's one thing from each of those sections. Not ALL of them. If you're getting married in NY, your county will accept a license you get anywhere in the state. Just go do it.

I doubt that you have to have a passport to get married in any county in the US. Not everyone has one so this would be surprising to me.

Wow. I'm never leaving Texas. We have it easy here. We only had to show our driver's licenses.

    Other states seem so complicated!
